I was reading a Sony press release about the Dev kit redesign (the one with the price drop to $2000)....here is a quote:

"Having the same form factor as the commercially available PS3, the new Reference Tool models allow advanced game programming and more efficient computer graphics rendering," the company said via press release. "With its more affordable pricing, this new model will appeal to a broader range of developers and publishers, and will help to provide a more streamlined game development environment, further accelerating game development for PS3."

Does this mean that is has upgraded hardware inside? Does this mean that overclocking might be possible on retail units? Does anyone have official specs for the new dev kits?

As Canuckerz said, you can only buy the dev kit if you are a licensed developer...the Sony dev site is here, but you need to be a licensed developer to get any further into the site.

I?ve seen that about playing burnt games on Dev consoles before. I am too lazy and dumb to mod a console. I actually like supporting game developers and musicians that produce a product that excites or moves me. I want them to create more and paying them is the best that I can do as far as giving them support. I am guilty of DLing some songs from the 80s (my teen years) that I had bought on cassette (that?s a magnetic tape strip for some of you wiper snappers) that has lost its quality.

If you look around, you can find Dev and debug/test consoles for sale.

Yes, you can buy them, and yes, they will play copied games. However, the price to buy one is so high that you would have to pirate at least 30 games to make it worthwhile.

My main question is related to the performance...I am tired of GTA4 slowing to a crawl every time I blow stuff up, and have become interested in possibly overclocking the system if possible. It seems from the press release that the dev unit is pre-overclocked, and might yeild clues as to how to do it safely.

I thing the boost in performance in the dev units, is to help in the creation of games, i dont think the the PS3 can be overclocked, saying that, your GTAIV problems, have nothing to do with the processor, i dont think the game uses half the PS3 processing power, the problems could be over heating etc.

I would hope that all things are created equil, as, dont create a game on a Dev with a scan time of 10ms while my 60 can only scan at 40ms. Kinda like some of the firmware updates. It works fine on some systems and not on others. And, yes. If we could ALL safely overclock eaisly, that would be great.

lol why would you need to overclock the PS3, its only using about 40% of its power, if even that, the only thing it would need is a ram upgrade.

Good to see prices coming down so more people can develop for it.

My lame since of humor. Here in the USA, in the Spring, we advance our Clocks 1 hour (over clock) so that we don?t waist any daylight in the morning. In the Fall, we set the clocks back to normal time.

Overclock? I've never heard that one before. Usually it's just "set it one hour ahead" or "one hour back."

It's actually kind of lame. Ooh, we get one more hour of sleep the first night--Oh wait, that means we lose an hour of sleep the last night. How abso-freaking-lutely wonderful DST is.

We don?t call it over clocking either. Just trying to justify my stupid statement. I?ll quit while I?m behind.

I prefer DST.

My GTA4 problems have been there since i bought the unit, and are there on my friend's units with different coppies of the game. They also exist in the 360 version, and on the PC version (at least with the outdated PC I tried it on). Whenever you toss a gernade at 3-4 cars that are next to eachother, the explosion makes the game go into slow motion. It seems doubtful to me that generating an explosion is taking up a bunch of ram...seems more like the video chip is overtaxed.

I opened up my PS3 today, and noticed that the cooling system is a joke. I could make a much better set of coolers at home, and a professional manufacturer like Zalman could easily double the cooling performance for both chips without changing the fan. It would also be very easy to double (or more) the cooling on the chipset and memory.

I think the only reason we have not seen a flood of aftermarket PS3 coolers is the lack of overclocking capabilities. I'm not sure this would even qualify as overclocking, as the tiny coolers in mine make me think that they must have underclocked the chips to get them to work with so little cooling. This is where the Dev unit sparks my interest. I know that the dev units get different firmware...and I think there is a good chance that the performance improvements are part of that firmware.
