The problem isn't the flashing of the drive, as I understand it. The problem is pulling the drive key at all. Without the drive key, no go on flashing new firmware, even to another drive =\

You could hack it using BIONIC POWERS.
Though some of the new Lite-ON's are hackable. It's very random. If you don't like relying on luck I don't recommend trying to go for one until someone figures out how to dump them.
I got a new elite with a July Lite-ON that was unhackable, and returned it for a September Lite-ON that was hackable. So it seems to be random. M$ is just effing with our minds.

I've only flashed one console (my own right after wave 3), it all sort of flew out of my head. I've been meaning to refresh my memory for 1.61, but lite-ons aren't supported yet.

Should I just go get one, because I plan on modding my 360. I know we can't say for sure, but what are the chances of the 93450c and the 83850c being hacked?

Another note -- the fine print of the ad states that the gift card can be used for online purchases only.
Still a good deal, and I am thinking I will pick one up, but I just thought everyone should be aware.

Whats this talk of Liteon being unhackable. i flashed both liteon....there are only 2 diff modems right? one that requires probe which is easy to flash and the one that doesnt need probe which seems easier to flash. i only flashed one of the newer ones but didnt have any problems

4 versions stealthdf....the 7xxx series that needs the probe, the 8xxx that can be flashed, the 8xxx that cant be flashed, and the 9xxx that cant be flashed.

ah ok well damn im out of the loop more than i thought. you say 8xxx and 8xxx that can and catn be. is there a way to tell when looking at a 8xxx model or do you just have to try and see if it works?

There are actually 4 variants out there.
74850C and 83850c pre AUG 2009 can be modded.
83850c in and after AUG 2009 and 93450c can not be modded.

ok well guess i got lucky,someone broguht me a new eleite straight from the store like 2 weeks ago and i used the newer tutorial leerage made for the 8XXX and it works perfect. thanks for the info. i need to start comming here more often again

Yeah my brother bought an Arcade a few weeks back and it had a 74850C in it. So it really depends on if the store has old or new stock.

83850c in and after AUG 2009 and 93450c can not be modded.
That's not entirely correct.
83850c pre JULY 2009 can be modded.
I had a July model that could not be flashed.
83850c in and after JUL 2009 may or may not allow you to flash them. It's random.
I returned my JUL model, and got a SEP model that I could flash. And you can tell by the numerous people writing that they have flashed post august LOs.

Im probably going to get one of these this weekend as well and keep it as a backup till my current one either dies or gets banned someday. If its not flashable i might just hold onto it in hopes hat they can crack it soon. IF i tried to return it for a diff one what would i say? it not broken but i want to swap?

Depending on the store you go to they may or may not ask you anything. I don't know how walmart is on returns. I live in Canada so I got my elite from futureshop. couldnt flash it, so i got an exchange for an arcade bundle. so it was kinda a given that I just wanted the cheaper model... lol. i would assume that if i was like, "i want a different elite" they woulda asked why.
so i guess one method would be to get the pro or the elite so then you have a good reason to return it. just say you changed your mind and you don't really need the hdd.
alternatively, if you don't care where you get it from, lots of places have refund policies. so technically, you could just get a refund and try a different store.

Also, FYI, I am not sure if the deal is still going, but last year MS started a program where if you bought an Arcade model, they would sell you a hard drive from their web site for $20.
$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check
