Well, I just noticed that I accidentally 'upgraded' the firmware on a Lite-On I just flashed with 1.6 rather than 1.6 REPACK version of iXtreme.

The files most definitely are different, as their MD5 hash is different.

I developed problems with booting certain wave 3 games that I luckily didn't pull ALL of my hair out over. On a hunch I tried it, and it turns out the 'activate' disc was required for those games to work. GO FIGURE!

My question is this -- what the heck is the true difference between the firmware revisions of 1.6 vs 1.6 REPACK? Obviously the original release isn't up to snuff, but is anything else different? Does the original 1.6 release operate detectably wrong in any way?

Thanks, guys. Appreciate it.

When iXtreme 1.6 was released, a beta version for the Lite-ON 74850C drive was accidentally released instead of the final version. Shortly after, the firmware team released the repack which was the actual final version. The initial iX 1.6 for Lite-ON 74850C had wave 3 issues.

When ix 1.6 was first released on day one. All people like me who could not wait for the update started flashing ix 1.6 for liteon. The problem: it could not be be flashed. A few hours after the first release team hyperx appologized for a bad file for ix 1.6 they said it was a bad "compresion" when uploading file, so 1.6 "REPACKED" was released.

I still remember being unable to use ix 1.6 it would not upload to drive. Even if you managed to flash ix 1.6 I would recomend using REPACK version. Thats the reason for the different names.

Thanks for the answers, guys.

Leerage, to the best of your knowledge, did the original 'beta' 1.6 firmware itself report any detectably bad responses?

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

Lol... thanks Qwert99. :)

As for all I know it was iXtreme 1.6 with just bad wave 3 support. I was able to flash the Lite-ON with it and boot a Wave 2 game. It was only a couple of hours after release and the repack was up. Did you console go online with the original iX 1.6?

Yep, I went online with the original iX1.6. This was during the ban wave, and I assumed my FW was good, so I went on to check my XBL status.

Unbanned... hey hey.

Hopefully it will stay that way during the next wave, after this little mishap. In any case, I'll be picking up one of those $100 Arcade consoles at my local Wal-Mart this Saturday, just in case.

By the way, I think I am going to make that ^------ my sig line.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. But I think you should be OK as I went online to with original iX 1.6 for Lite-ON, and I made it through this ban wave. :)

It does make sense that it wouldn't get a ban, but I just wanted to be parno, errr, safe.

Thanks again.
