Right, well I was really into the PSP scene around about 2 years ago, and I had myself an original PSP (The fat one!), and I managed to create a Pandora's battery and Magic MS to update it to v3.52 m33-4 and it served me very well for months until I dropped it, cracking the screen in the process. I stuck it in my drawer and forgot about it until this week, were I discovered Assasins Creed & Little Big Planet were being released for it, so I decided to get back into the swing of things!! I've replaced the screen and my PSP is working again, so now I'm reading up again to find out what steps I now need to take.

I'm a little confused. At the time when I was into the PSP last time around, Dark Alex was probably THE name behind the CFW's released, and although it seemed a little complicated, I managed to find out what to do. Now I'm a little confused regarding the new security measures the later games use.

From reading up, I'm not sure whether it's best to go for a 5.50 / 5.55 / 6.00 CFW? GEN? GEN2? And I've read that now you need to run the ISO through a "decrypter" for the iso to load once on the MS?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me, as many of the posts on here tend to contradict themselves. Some people say one route is better than an other, and I feel that this is due to personal preference rather than based on what is actually needed to be done?

Looking forward to your replies!!

Firmware preference is always up to the user to figure out what is best. But in order to play the new PSP games you need to be at 5.00M33-6 at the minimum. Some people are using 5.50 GEN and it seems to work mostly ok for them, but occasionally you hear some grumbling about things not working right.
All the new games do have to be run through a decrypter in oder to remove Sony's new security, but it isnt a tough process. And if you are one of them horrible people who downloads your stuff(shame on you, lol) then it is probably already properly converted for you.

lol!!.. EEE31, in a single post, you've reassured me there are still decent people whom trawl through forums. I was really expecting what seems to be the most common kind of response on these forums these days, and that is either sarcasm, condescension, completely biased internal opinions or complete ignorance! I sincerely thank you!

Thanks for commenting that the 5.00 m33-6 is a decent CFW to consider. When I was into the CFW scene a few years ago, I always (by R.O.T.) upgraded to the latest m33 release, or whatever CFW Dark AleX released! Countless people have told me that the GEN's are the best CFW to go for at the moment, but I've been told you loose some (if not most of) the homebrew functionality? I've also been told that some homebrew app's can cause certain games to not work? I may be wrong on this, but it is a concern!

With the decryptor, is it a case of the program will decrypt EVERY current release, or is it always a 50/50 chance?

Thanks for your help so far. I hope others find this post useful and informative, rather than another thread to turn into something pointless!

As you are going from 3.52

When you proceed to 5.00m33 you will notice that it is slower to run games (especially .cso files) so DA released 5.00m33-6 - this has an option in the recovery menu to speed up the memory stick, this works really well.

I have used 5.50Gen-D2 - the homebrew is pretty much a red herring now - they mostly do work, there have been a few issues with old games not running (usually down to a poorly ripped game) however the big issue for me was the speed - all my games are .cso and they were laggy, I went back to m33-6.

However I would say that I had no other issues, if they implement the speed up they I would have no hesitation in upgrading.

On Decrypting, the only game currently not working (that is reliably working on Gen) is a mini called Brainpipe, all others work well, however the PSN games are not always successful and you need to wait for a UMD rip (Jak & Daxter). Ongoing - who knows, update to 5.00m33-6 and then see, if issues come up you can always upgrade to Gen,
