im trying to prepare for the worst if the ban hammer hits and am looking for a tut for backing up and restoring the nand on my console.
any info on this would be gratefully received.

From what I remember, it's possible with an Infectus modchip, but not worth the effort of soldering to your banned console (to get it's identification number), de-soldering and soldering to a non-banned console (to get it's identification number), de-soldering and re-soldering to the banned console (to put non-banned identification number on banned console), de-soldering and re- soldering to the non-banned console (to put banned identification number on it).
My opinion. Just buy a cheap, used console.

One way I could see this being useful is if you could buy a console that is in really bad shape for a very low price, or for free, and rip the serial from that motherboard. Then reflash your banned motherboard with those numbers.
$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

True. But I'd hafta get it VERY cheap to even consider all that effort.

Certain system errors that allow the board to power up but do not allow games to be played could be useful for this. I am thinking certain that specifically unfixable errors, for instance stubborn RAM errors.
Perhaps some console repairmen/modders out there have some of these laying around somewhere.
For those people who have more free time than money, this may be useful ;)

i am thinking that backup nand may be useful for people who get banned from live but want hard drive functionality on xbconnect etc.
any thoughts ??
also are there any methods that dont involve having a mod chip??

The problem is those who've updated to the latest dash are screwed. MS plugged the hole for the jtag hack. I believe that also covers the old method too, using the King Kong exploit.

I´m interested in backing up and restoring the nand too. Exactly because of the hd functionality thing. The write protection mod seems way more dangerous than backing up the nand.
I havent done the last update before ban wave and havent connect ever since...
Every tut that i found was extremely complicated, so if anyone knows a step by step one for dummys...

Just a random bit of info: to do the WP hack, you can also solder to an alternate point on the bottom of the motherboard, rather than the leg of the chip itself.
Just adding that if anybody wanted to do the WP hack but didn't want to risk the chip leg when soldering.

I didn't read too far in to the article about it, but did check out the diagram. By looking at the picture, it looked like it was necessary to lift the leg from the pad and add a switch in between. Isn't that the case?

No cutting or removing of the leg is necessary. All you need to do is solder onto either the leg or the alternate point on the bottom of the motherboard. You then connect that to ground in order to enable write protection. So the switch would go between the leg and the ground.

the write protect thing only PREVENTS MS from updating your NAND. It doesnt undo once you are banned
