Ok I got a crappy RROD from a guy for free...he basically had everything that could be taken apart in pieces...so I pieced it back together, did the xclamp fix, and now it's fine, except for one thing...the GPU keeps overheating. How do I know? After a while, it will be lightning hot and the screen will freeze in a checkered pattern.

I know it's not the fix...thermal paste is fine and the heatsink gets lightning hot, like it's supposed to. The problem is the fans. They will NOT increase their speed no matter what...its like something is wrong with the temperature sensor. It's not the fan themselves, I've tried other fans with the same result. You turn it on, and they spin fairly fast at first but then steadily decrease until it's barely blowing air at all...and no matter how hot things get in there, they refuse to speed up. They do however speed up when you enter a game, as they're supposed to...but they then cut back down to their "idle" state after about 10 seconds and won't increase, despite the temperature.

Has anyone ever heard of this or know how to fix it, apart from just installing an externally running fan?
