I have looked at a few rrod consoles and E74 etc. But one has been given to me with 2 red lights and 2 green lights alternating between the top and bottom with no display. If I plug the ethernet cable in the lights stop then after about either 30 seconds to 2 minutes I get one red light with E49. Does anyone know what this means and is it fixable at all?

Sounds like the hardware "ethernet" error. Supposedly a reflow can help with that error. I've never seen it myself, though.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

This is the first time iv'e ever been in possesion of an xbox with this problem. It's supposed to be either what you said or a nand update problem and it fails to connect.

The fact that it behaves differently when you plug in an ethernet cable makes me think it is the former and not the latter.

It is not a very common error, so I am not entirely sure how easy or difficult it is to fix.

If the console is under 3 years old and not banned, I would send it in to Microsoft for a proper reflow. You may have to induce E74/RROD for that to happen.

I think i'll have to say it's unfixable, I have another one here from 2006 off someone and heat alone has revived it (just having it on for a few minutes) but i'll do the x-clamp fix and see what happens.
