i was trying to extract the key on my lite-on 74850c last night..but every time i probed the r707 hole it would just say "Warning...Bad Serial Data" so after about a half hour of closing the tray a lil more, and opening it..trying to just get it to work..i gave up. put it back together and now whenever i try to watch a dvd or play a game..it spins for a second, the laser comes on..but then it stops like it cant read the disc and says open tray..i didnt do anything extreme with it like soldering points or anything..i just probed the r707. so does anyone know what i can do to fix this? please tell me im not screwed.

Though they play an important role in the early stage, the techniques should not be too mechanical, complex or restrictive. If we cling blindly to them, we shall eventually become bound by their limitations.

Open tray errors are usually caused by a laser problem. You may have inadvertently grubbed up the laser lens or the drive's pot. If it were a key problem, the error would be 'Play DVD'.

Clean the lens and try again. After you clean the laser lens, you may want to get a multimeter and check the pot resistance. For a Lite-On, the default is usually around 4-6 ohms at 20k on the multimeter.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

You will need to do a POT cal or replace the drive.

If the pot tweak doesn't work, I would recommend replacing the laser rather than the drive itself. A new laser is about $10 shipped, as compared to a new drive, which is about $30 shipped. Also, it will not require a reflash.

I would have to disagree. Replacing the drive is much easier and faster. You are right when it comes to price, but most people do not have solder skills. I have also bought benQ's for the same price as a laser.

Replacing the laser does not require soldering except to remove the anti-static blob of solder. It is just a matter of unclipping the cable and re-clipping the cable.

Nice to know. I've actually never done one LOL. I've seen the lasers on ebay for $10 or so. I would assume you need to do a POT cal?
