Google Chrome OS coming next week?

article published on 13 November, 2009

The Google Chrome OS, first announced back in July, will be available next week, says a TechCrunch report. The free, open source operating system should be released in a very early form, as promised, with broader support in 2010. Said Google at the time: "Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start ... [ read the full article ]

Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."
Hope it works, but hackers today are very sophisticated and smart, at one time people argued java was virus proof too. If code executes you simply have the opportunity for viruses and malware.

And isn't Google OS actually just a Java-like virtual machine running on top of a Linux kernel...not REALLY an OS?

or if crome os uses whitelist approval. meaning that if software is approved by google or trusted 3. party, os is allowed to install/use that software, instead of blacklisting software like virus scanners do.

also if i understood correctly most software will be run via web browser (so you dont have to approve every software) or something similar and if browser is being ran on virtual machine you would have to compromise security of that "virtual machine" then find security hole from browser that ables you to do nasty stuff to os. Meaning that it is alot of work for something that google can fix by patching any of those holes in virtual machine, browser or in os.

I'll believe it when I see it. There are just as many sites stating that the impending release of Google's OS is a fake.

Google is spyware and it spreads like a virus...this is why they are against spyware scanners and anti-virus software. And yes, it is little more than a new Linux GUI...just one of many.

Among the sites confused about the release of Google OS was the one used in this article "TechCrunch." So far all the reports that I've read stating that Google is being released in a week have been proven to be fake. This is why I said that I'll wait until I see it before believing it. I know that Google is developing one I just doubt that it will be available for download in a month let alone a week.

This is not fake, but it does look a lackluster. Until we know more details one can only assume its some nix variant with google's own wm.

Down with sigs.

I realize that Google's development of an OS is real but I have as of yet located a legitimate website that indicates its release in a week. If you have an actual Google link I would appreciate it if you would post it.

The best info that I found suggests that the earliest it will become available is in the second half of 2010 which means after June 2010. That's a good 7 months or more from now which is lot longer than 7 days or so. I've got a rig ready to go to test it.

Hmmmm... First it was the search engine, then the web browser and now they're thinking about building a car too. What next, Google branded food?

I was gonna make another joke thing Google could do but now that I think about it I would buy a Gaming system from Google.

There is already a gaming system dedicated to low system specs and lack of functionality...it is called the Nintendo Wii.

True but im pretty sure the G system would use your search result to play the game for you instead of motion controls.

I was under the impression this OS was going to be very much like Google's Open Source mobile OS, Android; essentially running on a Linux kernel with a Java ME running on top of it..

Personally I am a big fan of Android, as there is a lot of possibility for adaptation and user development - my device isn't running a standard Android OS anymore, for example.

Although Google are leaning towards becoming a big evil corporation (and some people may consider them to be well there already), I do think that there is some promise left.

Edit: I have to agree with Sophocles, though, in that a week is a stupidly optimistic time-frame for the first release of Chrome OS. If I'm proved wrong I'll eat my proverbial hat!
