Hey guys I was looking to pick a PS3 after learning I can install ubuntu as an os on the system. What I wanted to know was

1.(currently running 9.10 on desktop)what version is being support as of today on the PS3?

2. Could I play videos with different codecs ( MKV, Avi, ect)

3. How do you go about changing the mode I guess when you want to play a ps3 game?

4. How stable is the OS once installed?

I guess I just want a bit of a review from someone who has tried this. Thanks for the heads up in advance would be a great help to hear from you all.

I had forgot to ask can ubuntu be installed on playstations3 new 250gig system?

The 250GB, is a slim console, the ability to install Linux, was removed from slim consoles.

I installed linux on my PS3, used it for about 2 hours, then formatted my drive and returned my PS3 to normal. Althought the system runs ok, it is no where near the same as a fully functional desktop.
When I used it, it was a hassle to install, and the benifits were minimal. I'd recommend sticking with your desktop, and using your PS3 to play games/watch movies straight from the XMB.

I know the new slims dont have the Linux functionality, but thought i'd give my experience as he may decide to get an "original" model to use linux with (I prefer them to the new slim's anyway).
I'm not sure about other places, but the older units are still widely available over here, there are even quite a few BC models available.
