Hi Im using DVD X Copy Express the problem is when I installed it first it would read+write a DVD in about 40 mins but now it's taking about 50 mins to read and the same to write. I've reinstalled it it's still the same.
Can anybody help?
Im running Windows ME P3 1Ghz with 256 mb ram Pioneer106D DVD burner

I think that is about a normal time for your system specs. Could also be the size of the different movies.

Car.Mike made a very good point.
40 minutes to read/write is normal for a DVD-5 that doesn't need compression and 50 minutes to read/compress a DVD-9 with your system specs sounds about right but.....
50 minutes to write seems odd.
Have you switched brand/type of media? What brand/type have you been using?
Any new software you may have installed that could be producing background load?

Hi I was using "Grade A Media" DVD-R but now i've switched to "Arita" DVD-R (both are 4 speed)
One thing I will say is that I was running Windows XP Pro (But my God did it break my heart) and I reformatted my drive and reinstalled Windows ME but the DVD X Copy Express was running ok when I reinstalled it on to Windowds ME but this problem seems to be only happening in the last few weeks, Should I uninstall Nero 6 or Roxio 6?, I only use these for burning CD's.

For the love of God, uninstall Roxio. The only thing Roxio is good for is screwing up other burning apps. If you have Nero there is absolutely no reason to keep Roxio and every reason to get rid of it. I think the people who made Roxio specifically engineered it to screw up Nero.
I'd suggest uninstalling both Roxio and Nero, rebooting, then install Nero. Once you do this then give the burning a go and see if things don't shape up.
Why exactly did you dump XP for ME?

Thanks for that tip without Roxio on the system it now takes about 20-25 mins to read a DVD. (Im still in therapy form my XP experance) I was running Windows ME for 3 yrs so I decieded to upgrade to XP boy was it a bad mistake, I downloaded all the correct drivers for my graphics card and modem and updated differant peices of software to make them compatiable with XP but the system would keep freezing for unknown reasons and for all the help Microsoft gave me was usless, so i cut myself loose from the XP experance and now Im back with ME everything is running perfect

Bizarre. I had exactly the opposite experience for the entire two months I used ME. If I wasn't bald already, I would've pulled all my hair out from trying to deal with it. Random reboots, blue screen, apps locking up right and left - you might check with the Guiness Book of World Records for being the only person in existence who prefers ME to XP lol :)
So your read/write times are acceptable now? Very good call on the Aritas - quality media is paramount to a good burning experience.

Hi again,I done what you said (Remove Roxio) and I burned 2 DVD's (They took about 20min to read and 20 mins to write) but strangely it's gone back to about 50 mins to read and the same to burn. I've disabled my antivirus(Nortons) while reading and burning but no joy?????

And DMA is still enabled after the burns started taking longer?
Do you have Nero's InCD installed? Packet writing apps can interefe.
Just for kicks you might try using DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6 which interfaces with Nero to burn and see what happens.

When you say Shrink interfaces with Nero, what do you mean by that. I shrink to a file and then open Nero to burn. What command do you give Shrink to to burn?

Hi sorry for the delay i was working the night shift, but yes the DMA settings are checked and InCD for Nero is not loaded

Edit > Preferences > File I/O then tick the box "enable burning with Nero".
@Brewster,
Try running zapper60, it will remove all traces of Roxio from your system:

Along the same lines, I have a 708a. Previously I had it in an asus motherboard with windows xp and the drive performed wonderfully, along with my samsung dvd/cdrw combo drive. I since moved to a p4 3ghz with an MSI motherboard and quite frankly, the dvd writer is performing poorly. Before p4 the plextor outperformed the samsung now it's the other way around, with the samsung reading the same disk in literaly half the time or less.
