The 79 requires the audio disc. Are you using that?

I thought the whole point of these kits was to have an easy option to put the drive into mode B?
In any case, one other option is that you can use the Slax boot CD method. Essentially you just download the Slax boot CD, boot from it with your drive connected to the PC's SATA but powered from an outside source, then restart the PC and do things normally. Slax will have put the drive into mode B and you should now be able to access it.
The audio disc comes with iXtreme firmware, I believe. It is a special disc that you need to burn and then play (using JF is the easiest way) to get access to the drive.
$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

The link is in JF to download it. Download it, put it in the hitachi drive and hit send B

Hit the drop down and check all the ports in JF. Or try another port on your via card. Does the drive eject?

OP
just to chuck in my two penneth..... the 79 is a pain in the ass to get into modeB, i've had them go 1st time or try and try again :( I had two issues with this drive :
1/ i hadn't burnt the 79 unlock cd properly
2/ i was hung up on the drive letter assign
both were a case of trial and error but i think if you use portIO you don't get assigned a drive letter, as long as it is picked up in the port properties then you are good to go.

These are cake to do. I use portio. Get the drive to show up. Hit "Send B" with the tray ejected and audio disk in. Close tray and let it spin. Hit 79 unlock, then dump the firmware. If this doesn't work, then your laser is probably dead. I had to pull the board off a dead one and put it on a working drive (good laser) to dump mine.
