It is basically a marking to show the true owner of the disk, the rental store I think. If you try to remove it only part of the sticker will be removed, and you will have to pay the video store for the cost of the disk. If you were wondering if it is some type of tracking, or anti-piracy thing, don't trip it's just a sticker.

Just a curiosity... why would the sticker deter "theft"? I.e., what is there reasoning...

its the same antitheft system that is on products in the store. it has something on it that sets off the alarm when you walk through those things (lol, have no idea what they are called).

if you have the movie in your pocket and just walk out, the alarm will go off. when you rent the movie, the clerk places the movie next to the door, on the other side of the security device, where you pick it up and then leave (maybe your video store doesn't have this).

not sure what the sticker looks like as i`m in the UK, but our local library has a new system, a tiny thin metal strip is on the back of the barcode sticker on books, dvd`s, cd`s (one was coming of and i could see it)

when you take one of them out, they wipe over it with magnet thing, and then when you take it trough to door the alarm doesn`t go off, BUT if you take it back late. ie 8 days later instead of 7 then the alarm sounds! it has a small chip or something, cause if you take the same item out again after having it wiped the alarm is silent!
