got my PS3 slim running on my old LCD TV that I also use as my PC monitor (5ms response). It does not have HDMI input so I have connected with the supplied AV cables.

I went through the menus and set the PS3 up as I thought correct but the picture is not always sharp... can anyone confirm if I have the right settings?

PAL
16:9 (its a 15.4" widescreen)

well, ps3 is mainly an HD cnsole, the first few months when i got my ps3, i had it on a SD tv, the picture was pretty bad, i ended up buying a 26" HD tv just so my ps3 had good picture. but yea ps3 on SD will never realy have great picture. i realized this one time, i put 480p on thru HDMI and i had pretty good picture, but any picture thru the composite cables will look crapy. best i can say is, maybe get a hmdi to dvi, then a dvi to vga, i asume that ur tv has no dvi, but has a vga

Spot on, it does have a VGA input - I use this for my gaming PC. Perhaps it is indeed time to save up for a better TV.

Thanks for your help.

oh it was a much bigger and better screen that was full HD... there was a small problem (for that read scorch marks on the wall) and now I am using my old TV - kept as a backup).

Believe me, running Crysis (and Left 4 Dead) on the old screen was VERY immersive - sadly this is no longer the case - ho hum.

Chief, what's the maximum resolution of your monitor? I doubt that it can be less than 1280x720. (Though maybe that's just the case for LCD monitors, not TVs. I don't have much experience with pre-HD LCD TVs.)

The reason I ask what your max resolution is is because although you're outputting at 480i (since you're using the default A/V cables), the monitor might be upscaling it to fit the screen, which almost always results in muddy textures.

You'll definitely have more luck when outputting through HDMI or Component cables (red/green/blue video cables + red/white audio cables). There are many HDMI/Component-to-VGA adapters out there, as well, and they're fairly cheap.

I would definitely recommend going that route instead of using the supplied composite cables, because you'll be able to optimize the quality of the video.

Max resolution on the TV for when I am in PC mode is 1280x800.

I might have to look into this then, I wonder if I can play with the resolution a little to see if I am indeed upscaling - I never thought of that. I'll have a play tonight and let you know how I get on... cheers Kaj

There is none.

I had a HD TV with a HDMI socket. Got a PS3 but used it with via the scart lead thought whats the point in using a HDMI cable when the scart should be good enough.

First game I got was GTA4, it was playable via teh scart lead but what kept annoying me is that I couldnt read half the writing in the game esp online when checking others peoples' ID.

Bought a HDMI cable and I can tell you it makes a huge difference! So if and when you can afford one I do recommend you get a HDMI compatible TV.

Your monitor probably is upscaling it, then. The only output resolution through that yellow composite cable is 480i - standard definition.

Definitely get an HDMI cable or component cable (and you can get cheap cables for $5-10 online; don't buy the overpriced Monster crap), along with a HDMI/component-to-VGA adapter. When you go to Display Settings and choose Automatic, your PS3 should automatically choose an output of 720p (that's what I'm guessing the max is - 1280 x 720) or 1080p (if it can go that high).

You'll notice that there's a very, very big improvement in video quality. Good luck.

Yeah, hey, if you've got nothing to say that actually helps or is funny, then do us a favor and don't bother posting. It's pretty obvious you didn't even bother reading anything, because the LCD monitor he's using as a backup is clearly capable of outputting HD video.

So you know what they say: "It is better to not speak and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Thanks for your help Kaj (and everyone else) - I'll look into getting a component adaptor until I can afford to replace the TV again.

The problem is not with the connection, but with the screen.

720P = 1280x720
Your screen - 1280x800

So, the horizontal stays the same, but the vertial gets stretched out, and gets blurry in the process. Component cable are not helping the problem, but I don't think you are going to be able to get around this issue. I had a similar issue with my 22" screen that was 1680x1050...720P got upscaled just fine in the width, but was then stretched out of proportion and clarity for the height. Some screens will create letterbox-style bars to compensate for this, but from the sounds of it, your screen does not.

Seriously, you can get a 24" new for $215...if that is too much, most pawn shops have them for $100 or less. If this is still too much, then you should be looking for a job rather than playing video games.

The PS3 only outputs at 480i, 480P, 720P, 720i, 1080P, and 1080i. Your screen does not support any of these...it is a widescreen, so 480P will be streatched and blurry. 720P would be correct, but with a 800pix vertical size, the picture will get stretched up

Yeah, but he was only outputting at 480i anyway. There's no way it would look any bit of decent when upscaled to around 720p.

But good point on the possibility of it not letterboxing the video. From what I remember, some monitors will letterbox and others will stretch. Even if it does stretch it vertically, making sure the PS3 is outputting at as high a resolution as possible is still a good idea.

Well, my cables turned up this morning so I'll have a go this weekend and see what I can do, the S-Video mode on the TV will have loads of settings because the PC-RGB one did and I'll have a bit of a play around.

I must surely get a better picture from a separate wire for each colour component (and luminescence) as opposed to a single 2 core cable providing that same info.

Well, I finally got around to trying my new cable and I have some news.

It does make a bit of a difference (went from 480p to 560p). I notice the difference mainly on text displayed on screen. I may be able to improve things a little more when I start playing around with the other display settings, but at the moment, the output is still set to AV/S-Video.
