all you really need to watch out for is the manufacturing date. if its anything newer than sep 09 you cannot mod the drive as of yet. there are some aug boxes that also contain the unmoddable drives.
any xbox is fair, and you should go on ebay and buy a banned console if you don't plan to use it online. These usually go for much cheaper than their ubanned counterparts

Is there a list somewhere that contains the manufacture dates in August to stay away from?
I just purchased 2 XBOX 360 Arcades that were manufactured August 23rd of 2009. They contained July 2009 83850C Lite-ONs that were able to have the DVDkey dumped.
I was thinking of buying used ones, but I always here stories of RROD and stuff and all the crap that goes on with 360's so if I buy it used I could get screwed.
thats why i am more inclined to buying a new one,
and usually it seems, that people sell 360's with out the wires.. :/, no power adapter or cables.
I also read something about wave 2 and 3 and 4, kinda got my head in the sky because of it
