One of my good friends just had his 360 start freezing and go rrod. I've been fixing consoles forever so he sent it to me. I went to take it apart, and found something odd. When taking off the heatsinks the part that clamps onto the xclamp had a crush washer around it. It was also kind of odd because the thermal paste was more paste like and actually covered the whole processor die.

Now his xbox has a mfr of 2005-10-25 and the xclamps are dated oct 05. This is the oldest 360 i've ever taken apart. Has anybody noticed these little metal washers around the heatsinks legs?

I'll post a pic when i get home.

On the one launch console I have fixed it did have those small washers. I think Microsoft removed them because there were not necessary. I might add that the launch console I fixed was very well soldered and to date is the best condition motherboard I have ever seen.

If it was the best condition motherboard why did it need to be fixed?

It needed to be fixed because the metal tray is flawed on all xenon consoles. The standoffs are too high which causes more flexing of the board.

It would be safe to say that the failure rate is 100% for the xenon consoles.

Anyway it was just weird to find something new after fixing so many 360's. I'm surprised that his 360 lasted as long as it did.

That xbox I got actually was in ok condition the person the error code was 0102 so it was not a problem with the x-clamps it was something, to do with the ram. Sucks though because it got banned in the wave.
