Hi, i am new to afterdawn website, although i have used it many a time to solve problems... Not sure if i am posting this in the right place :)

Am an thinking about buying a External DVD Writer to burn 360 games (reason is, i have a laptop with a internal Optiarc writer but ive been gettin alot of I/O Errors while burning 360 games to Verbatim DL disc's at 2X.)

My problem is, i dont know what external burner to buy, i have been doing alot of reading but dont seem to be getting anywhere lol.

I only want to spend about £50, would just like a decent writer that will not give I/O Errors (or very little)

If anyone can help that would be great,
Thanks.

I just bought a samsung external writer from Maplin for £40 and it works fine on cheap disks so it should work with verbatims.

Drives being sold as external burners are essentially a laptop burner in a box, so they are not really a good option unless you want it to perform like a laptop burner. I guess you know what that means.

A better alternative is to get a 5.25" external DVD enclosure and put a desktop PC internal DVD drive into it. The enclosure will run you about $30 and the internal drive about $30. Half that to convert to GBP and you have a new setup that will actually work for about 30 pounds.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=224083 <-- Check that out, it is a 5.25 drive, not like a laptop drive, so im asuming there wouldnt be a difference between buying that n building one myself..

I could be wrong though :)

I haven't heard a lot of success stories from external burners, but you are free to hear the facts and make your own choice.

Well you could get an internal burner and put it into an enclosure with USB ports and then use that on your laptop. It takes literally 5 minutes to the drive into the enclosure and put in the screw that keeps it from opening.

So if i buy an internal writer and a encloser, that would burn better than a external writer..

If so, whats the best internal writer to get?

Ive read that Sony or Pioneer are pretty good.

Yes, an internal burner in an enclosure will be better than all but the most high-end retail external burners.

I have both a Pioneer and a Sony and they are both great. The Sony is 6 years old and still running like new. The Pioneer gets burn speeds up to 10x on DL media.

Awesome. I think you made the best choice. Now you have many more options if your PC situation changes, as well.

I'm glad everything worked out for ya. Thanks for giving an update.
