I have a Pal Wii 3.4E. modded with a modchip (not sure which but Ive had it for quite a while)
And have not used for like a year or so lol..

So I am not up to date with the latest news in the scene.

Is it still safe to update to the newest 4+ firmware?

Thanks for your time.

If you dont use homebrew and just play backups via your modchip then you're fine to update.

The 4.2 update does not effect modchips, only homebrew. It will remove nearly all homebrew from your console, and you'll need to go through some extra steps to restore it.

Thanks I only play backups.

I also heard 4.2 has issues with region free from an other forum user.

Which game uses a 4.1 update then?

Isn't the latest update required to play tales of symphonia 2?

I have a soft mod wii, and bought the new super mario bros game and want to play it. What exactly is the update going to do? and how hard is it to put the soft mod back on?

Nice thread hijack.

To answer your question though, 4.2 will delete your softmod and homebrew channel, and NSMB cannot be played via a plain softmod anyway. You need either a modchip or a USB loader to play the game.

If you do update to 4.2 though, then you can use this guide to reinstall your homebrew. http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=171901

Thank you, I did not realize that it would be an issue to post in a question in this thread sorry. Next time I will start a new thread for my questions.

I have a modchip, too and how do I know it's safe to do a "wii system update"? I have a new game and when I put it in I get the message "wii system update"? will I still be able to play all my other backups if I do a wsu? is it safe to do at all or should I just ignore it and not bother with the game?

I was about to do the wii system update before I got the following alert "if you have a system modification updating your console could become inoperable click I accept to continue or shut down your console to decline"

What do I do now?
