ah, the hdd itself will still be locked whether you try a linux format or not. It's like trying to use a different key on a combination lock. You still need the combination regardless.
Also, does debian support a fat file system format? Or just reiserfs? If it only supports reiserfs, non linux users will be out of luck.

If I remember it correctly, xbox lock the hard drive with a user password. The master password was never set by xbox. So, It is possible to unlock the hard drive using master password using hdunlock and hddisabl, or atapwd.

Im trying to install my orig xbox hdd to my pc but cannot get passed the first step.After installing the hdd back into xbox i cannot find or get to the evolutionx dash.i also do not have the option to choose evox at the bios bank selection screen.when i replace the large hdd it goes straight to evox after the bank select screen.must be something simple im doing wrong.Help?

okay okay for the better of the people reading this thread, there is a good tutorial on www.xbox-scene.com describing this process. To find the tutorial, go to the site, tutorials, other tutorials, and its the last tutorial on the page (i had to type that out instead of giving link because the site apparently uses dynamic html). Anway, i myself am at a loss in completing the unlocking process. I am 95% there, only the last step seems to be NOT working. I have another thread going right here on afterdawn, regarding this situation, and not a lot of people seem to know the real answer to the problem.

i have a naber next door thats a genus with computer shit
and he said you can partion it with linux (fdisk)
and he also said i have to do some research (that ass hole never gives me strait ansers i alwasys have to research :(
but i was woundering if it could help anybody else and come back to this thread

I'll try to lay this out as simple as possible. The Xbox motherboard (MB) sends a unique unlock passcode to the hard disc drive (HDD) at the boot process. The first thing a locked HDD does after its powered on is to wait for the unlock passcode. When the correct passcode is recieved the HDD will unlock itself and will be ready for use. If it does not recieve the correct passcode the HDD will not enter a ready state and can not be used at all.

also i was serching google.ca and in one website they were talking about zap i think it was for ibm it blew the password pertection
i was woundering if anybody that is a electrionic guy could check this out i lost the site

the inner workings (or detailed workings) of a hard drive and it's lock are not fully known to me, so I don't know about "zap" blowing the password protection. IMO, it sounds like somebody blowing smoke out of their ass.
And no format program is capable of bypassing (or "picking") a hard drive's lock system, linux or not. Partitioning the drive will do nothing, seeing as how it's impossible to do so with the hdd being locked.
I suppose it's not out of the question for a program of some sort to be able to guess the correct password *given enough time* (I think that was covered a little in another thread. was it this one?). But, until then, if you have a locked xbox hdd without it's mobo, sorry (unless you want to try and do a platter swap :P).

Okay before i try to sound all professional like, let me just state that 'i have unlocked a xbox hdd and am currently using one and am very happy with it'.
Lets begin, things needed:
1. A functional xbox that contained the harddrive
2. Knowledge on computer hardware, modding, and networking.
Step 1 is very important, and polish your brain up on xbox-scene.com for step 2.
Okay if you have modded your xbox and replaced your harddrive then this process will be very easy for you. Get a xbox app called ConfigMagic. This software will allow you to unlock your xbox and provide you with hdd key, which you really dont need. Replace your bigger hdd with ur old hdd and transfer the app through FTP. Load the app up, and in the main menu choose 'UNLOCK HD'. ITS THAT EASY. Now take the HD out, and put it into your computer under slave settings. Now your BIOS will recognize the HDD, but windows will not. Get a copy of 'Partition Magic' and it will recognize it. Now the software is not supposed to allow you to format it but through a workaround you will be successful. Click the drive and try to format it, partition it, and activate it. All three processes will fail, however by this time, windows will show you the drive. Now the last step is to just rightclick on the drive, and select format (done in win xp). There you have it, a perfectly functional 8gb or 10gb.
If all this sounds too complicated, i remind you that this process is for somebody who already has modded, and used networking with the xbox. Also if you want a 10gb drive make sure you go over the tutorial on xbox-scene.com about getting the extra 2gb from the drive. I was dumb enough to completely miss that step. Unfortunately the person who started this thread didnt want a solution which would relate using an xbox, but I just want to give back to the community the 411 to this process.
Oh yea and much respect to liquid51 for his help an knowledge. But the process he mentioned on his first post about the process of copying the HDD key and running the unlocking process through a floppy boot disk, DID NOT work for me, and many other posters on this forum, and other forums. Unfortunately you need to use the xbox the hdd was originally in.

well i could go in the menue with fire fuckers and unlock it but i have no video out put so i dont now where it is in the menue
i need a computer app to do it for me
tehre should be away to leave the computer on and let it unlock it in a day or something right
it would be worth it cauz some people dont even have ther xbox

actually , ya know its probably not worth the hassle, you can get an unlocked xbox hdd on ebay for like $5!
XB360 hitachi xtreme f/ware, chameleon case, whisper & airflow blue led. XBOX w/ 2.6 2x custom "djboogie" bios. PSP 1.50 w/ devhook .52 % 303 f/ware.

The process actually works fine, except that I'm retarded and didn't mention that you have to chop all of the zeros too. And you definately need the original mobo/hdd combo to get the proper key. Sorry if I was unclear, but this has NEVER NOT worked for me. I used fdisk to partition the drive and ran a regular format on it with no problems. I also had access to %100 of ths disc space.
I will agree though, using config magic is definately easier than unlockx.

heres the end of it. what you would need to do is monotor what the hdd does (head movement and stuff) as its being unlocked. then you need to find a way to control the heads and stuff that without the actual hdd circuits being powered up. then you would reset the key to what ever you want. there. one changed hdd lock.

liquid51 I DID remove the zeroes. Still it didnt work for me after about 20 retries and rechecks. It gave me the message that it unlocked it, however the command 'hddisabl' didnt work, which was instructed by the tutorial to be inputted. Even though it said it was unlocked it didnt show up in windows as a drive, which is why i couldnt format or partition it. Must be something else. And as I said earlier, I have been informed by other people that they have the same problem with this process. However i congatulate u on ur success.

often times evoX's backup function is used after the new hdd is installed. It's a good idea to backup the eeprom. But, that backup contains the lock/unlock key for your new hdd, not the original. The dos driven unlock program WILL say the hdd has been unlocked even if you use the wrong code. It will not however disable the lock with the incorrect code. Trust me, the exact same thing happened to me the first time I tried it. I then took apart my xbox and stuck the old hdd in, ran backup, got the correct key, and the rest worked a trick.
I'm willing to bet everyone ran backup after the new hdd was in, just to be safe and have an updated eeprom backup (it is a good idea). But, along with that is the incorrect key.
