Just got an Arcade model 360 and it's the crappy Liteon 74850C firmware, revision A020. I understand my only hope of modding the firmware is by using a CK3+probe. Has anyone worked on this revision before? I hear that accessing the R707 hole with the probe might not be possible due to my revision. True?

Anyone recommend a cheap/reliable source for the CK3+probe? I found it on 1 site for $50 total.

Well, the one I have -might- be able to be modded but I need to buy some extra hardware to read the key from the drive. I've read conflicting stories as to whether or not my combination of firmware and hardware revision makes this possible.

I learned not to trust the info I got from 360Drives as I was all psyched to mod it this afternoon (360Drives indicated I'd have the 8xxxxx firmware) and when I ripped the cover off, I was sadly mistaken when I saw the dreaded '74850C' there. :(

The 74850c is the one you WANT. You dread the 94 series and any 83 series made in Aug of '09.

Good point. I was just hoping for a drive that didn't require purchasing hardware that I'll probably only need 1 time. Guess I'll wait for the LT firmware to hit then buy the probe.

Is the CK3 only needed if I want to power the drive from my PC?

Also, is it true that once I manage to flash my 74850c with the use of a probe, if I need to flash it a week later, I'll already have the key and don't need to use the probe again, right?

Yes. But it is also a requirement for the probe that the same company sells, I believe. You can always take the big boy route and make your own probe, as well ;)

Correct. You will never need the probe again. Subsequently, you will even be able to read your key directly from your drive via SATA.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

Turns out my brother works with some electrical engineer dude who mods 360's in his spare time. I emailed him my model info and if says he can do it, I'll drive down there this weekend if the guy is free and give him maybe $20 for his time. I'll have him flash 1.6 on there for me then flash LT whenever it surfaces. I also found a local dude on Craigslist that charges $30 and says he can flash ANY 360 drive. I might punk out and just have somebody else do it. I'm positive I could do it myself since I modded my brothers 360 over a year ago and have modded PS1's, PS2's and countless Wiis. But heck, if somebody can help me avoid having to buy the CK3+probe, I'll take them up up the offer. If I had the older 8xxxxx firmware in my Liteon, and only needed to hook it up to my SATA port, I'd do it myself.

Thanks for all the info everyone!

BTW, I don't think anyone answered this yet but has anyone successfully modified the hardware revision of the 74850c I have? I've read conflicting reports as to whether it was possible.

The 8x drive is actually newer than the 7x drive. The strategy of obfuscating the key just accomplished different in the 8x drives. Rather than using a probe to get it, the key is encrypted.

You can make your own probe for $10 or less if you have a soldering iron, some resisters, and a paperclip.

And yes, the drive is easily modified.

I can confirm that this drive is able to be flashed, I picked up a refurbished pro model earlier this week and it had this drive in it. Just got my CK3 kit and Spear and flashed this drive with no problems. This was also my first LiteOn flash and it went perfect first time through. Hope the info helps.
