So my PS3 died yesterday. Sad thing was I was not even playing the damn thing when it died. I turned it on and It would power up for a few seconds but would turn off and proceed with the red light just blinking.
Bought it 7/10/07 and it kicked the bucket. I called sony and got pretty much what I was expecting to hear. I am out of warranty and I would have to fork over $169 canadian to have it fix and have my MW2 disc sent to me. Thing is this, for for another $130 I can buy a PS3 slim and I would get a year warranty opposed to having it fixed and get a 90 day warranty.
I'm pissed that that is all sony can do and I feel that for $626 I got just under 3 years out of my PS3. 10 year cycle huh?! Right...
Again I feel like I should get it fixed and still have a launch 60GB PS3 but again for another $130 I can get a PS3 Slim. What do you guys think?
If its a BC model and you play PS2 games on it i'd get it fixed.
If not, i'd buy a new machine. I'm not sure about Canada, but here in the UK there are still plenty of new "fat" models around, which I would choose over the slim, even without the BC.
Alternatively, ring Sony back and argue with them for as long as it takes until they give in and fix your machine for free. Im not sure about sony, but this has worked for me with loads of other companies. If you speak to someone high enough up (ie. not just the phone mokeys who can't deviate from their script) and make a valid arguement they should give in eventually.
The "10 year cycle" is how long they plan to keep making the system and games...the PS4 will probably be out by then, but there will be a "wrap-up" period just like there was for PS1 and PS2. Actual system life is not expected to be so long.
Agreed on the fatline...they are better, more reliable units with more features and a lower price...hard to justify a slim.
As for getting the disc out, you might be able to do it by using the eject button to turn on the system.
I have a launch 60gig as well. If it goes out, I will probably get a Slim. I don?t play PS2 games on it and don?t use all of the card readers. The only thing that I prefer with the 60 is the 4 USB ports. + for the Slim is 120 to 250gig and probably better build.
I have heard or reputable non-Sony repair shops that will repair PS3?s for @ $100. I have never personally checked on these repair places thow.
Honestly I have not played any PS2 games in a while. I have 2 PS2 games that I will not give up. Psychonauts and Okami and I also a PS1 game Discworld. You think though that since the PS3 has dropped in price the fee to have a PS3 repaired would drop. Anyway I am still undecided if I want to spend $299 on a slim.
My sons playstation, which is the fat version 40gig died last week, had it just under 2 years, for £300 you would have thought it would have lasted longer. The good news is i had a brain wave when i brought it and took out the extended warranty,at the shop now being done.My sons ps3 didn't get any flashing lights just wouldn't turn on just had the red standby light. The best of it is, since my lad has had it, hes hardly used it either at work or college, makes you wonder what you get for your money these days...
So I did it guys. Bought a PS3 slim today. I dismantled the old 60GB and got my MW2 out. I bought my PS3 at a local Future Shop (Best Buy -US). While at the store the manager for the videogames section told me that they had a 60GB launch PS3 open box! I was like WHAA?!?! I asked was it a demo or a return and he said no it was neither. I guess sometime they find stuff like that at their warehouse. They wanted $350 canadian for the thing before taxes but it did come with a 2 year warranty. After mulling it over I decided to get the slim cause well I just had enough cash for the slim.
Story does not end there. After we bought the PS3 slim, the fiance and I decided to go get a bit of grocery. We went to Superstore which is one of the bigger chain supermarkets here and it had an electronics department. They were selling the 120GB for $299 no taxes plus a free dual shock. Crappy part was when I got there they were completely sold out and all they had were the 80GB fat PS3 that came with a blu ray remote.
I rang Future shop as they will match a competitors promotion so I was able to get a free DS3 but they would not match the no tax deal.
