Hi,
First of all, please excuse me for being a complete noob on the whole linux thing. I understand that these questions may have been covered before and if so please just direct me to the best place to learn about it all.
Basically, I would like to install a linux OS on my ps3 (yes, it is a phat one). The main reason for this is to watch tv streamed from the internet via an internet browser that supports all flash requirements etc, and also to make backup images of my blu ray collection.
These are the only two reasons I want linux on my ps3.
For this purpose, what is the best linux to install, yellowdog or Ubuntu etc?
I have no idea what the pros/cons/differences are of these different version of linux so any help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated.

Yellow dog is a better noob OS...Ubuntu is a more "hands-on" release for people who want to compile their own kernals and such. There are a few other PS3-compatable distros, but yellow dog is probably the best for someone who has never used linux before...once you log in, it almost looks like windows 2000.

Awesome, thanks for the tip!
Any particular version of yellow dog or is it a case of the latest is the best? (which is the latest version by the way?)

YDL 6.2 runs good on my system, and I think it runs on all fat-ps3 systems.

If I have a bunch of movies saved onto the ps3 harddrive accessible via the XMB, it is my understanding that these movies cannot be copied to an external harddrive is that correct?
If so, is it possible to do this using Linux on the ps3?

Not sure if this is any good to you sabayon linux would be a good distro assuming it can run on a ps3 as it has XBMC as part of the install or if you want XBMC can be a stand alone install from it's dvd sabayon burnt iso,for your purpose i guess the full install would be best, not sure the reason to rip blu-ray with the ps3 surely a pc would be better using dvdfab or anydvd or some free ripper.
There is an ubuntu studio version which would be right up your ally, there's also a ubuntu satanic version..lol..no it's not as bad as it sounds

Linux on ps3 doesn't support flash because its not been developed for the architecture of the cell. The closest you will come to full flash support is a program called gnash. even then you will have problems playing any newer flash videos, version 7 and above.
