The PS3 remote... It is really nice, all the buttons you need and so on, but if you touch ANY button when the console is off it beeps and it turns on. I don't know if it's any different now but that's how mine is lol

That's odd. Is that a new feature with the slim? Mine only turns on when I hit the center PS button. I actually like that feature a lot.

Same, only works with the PS button, that is with stock controller and DS3.

My bad. I thought you were referring to the remote in the picture, which is the controller.

Thanks for this review it is very interesting. I have a Samsung BD-P1500 and a PS3 which are both used for Blu Ray playback. The PS3 is more versatile in its Video file playback and also it is more compatible with my amp which does not have HDMI. But the biggest let down of all with the PS3 is the industrial cooling fan which sounds a bit like an Airbus 320 taking off when the unit gets warm. So perhaps a section on ambient noise might have been worthwhile

Is your PS3 the one that was reviewed (slim)? I thought the slim was streamlined to run cooler, thereby it doesn't need "Airbus cooling"...lol. I here you though. My fatty is pretty darn loud!

I thought that the post was very informative as well. Its good that the staff of Afterdawn takes time to do tests like this, cause I never would've considered the Philips Blu-Ray to be even a contender. If I'm not mistaken it believe the Philips model is comparable to the one model at Wal-Mart. Might consider it as a worthy buy, although I would rather get it at more reliable electronic places (Amazon, Newegg, etc.) to get a better deal and reliability. Overall, it comes to show thst Blu-Ray has come along way since its conception. - BLUEBOY

At least it doesn't sound like a C-130. you know the 360 has steps start the engines, release the breaks, increase engine power. then you can take off.

"Unfortunately neither of them do not support YouTube HD material."
-I'm not the biggest youtube fan, but I still would not complain about youtube HD suppot, why do you?
Also, you forgot the PS3's best bluray feature...the updates. It seems like every month there is a change to bluray that eliminates some old players...the format isn't realy complete yet...there are not even 4 layer disc movies being made yet! PS3 will not have to worry about this, as sony will always add support into the updates, and the ps3 has already been shown to be able to read the 40-layer bluray prototype discs.

Sorry you are quite right, mine is the original 60GB PS3. I now stand it in the fireplace and it works splendidly with my back boiler to keep a nice ambient temperature whilst the noise scares the pigeons away. lol

I bought the remote when I bought my slim. I figured since I was spending that much money, why not an extra $20 for the (used) remote?
So far, no real problems. But yes, in the morning or at night when I am putting my remote on my nightstand and if I hit ANY button, it will turn the system on. Then I have to turn the tv on as well and wait for it to power up to turn it off.
D'oh!

I did not see what I consider to be the most important comparisions. I recently got a Sony BDV-E500W Home Theatre system and am disappointed with the Blue Ray player. There is no CC button on the remote so I have to scroll through the menus of the BD looking for the subtitles. There is no eject button on the remote, so I've got to hunt in a dimly lit room for the button on the unit itself to eject a BD. And the remote has more buttons than Carter's got pills and most don't seem to do anything. No wonder this $799 unit was free with purchase of an HDTV!

You need to use an application like this one here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...aviaddxsubs.cfm to add more than one subtitle track if you like.
You can choose size and colour too.
How do you activate the subs, using your controller, or will display by default?

You use the controller yes. In the movie press "triangle" and go to the subtitle option. If you have more than one subtitle language you keep pressing the subtitle option to cycle through them all.
You can have, for example, two subtitles for the same language but with different font sizes. You can have up to 8 subtitles. Very nice feature and very simple.
