Hey guys, unfortunately my PS3 stopped working a few days ago. Basically what happened was that I was playing Madden 10 Online, the console froze, I thought it was the opponent quitting or some lag. I waited for a while and nothing happened.

So I restarted the system and no disks at all were working!! :(

Anyways, did some research, found out about the PS3 Recovery Menu, did almost all the selections, nothing worked.

Especially the one that tells you "your hard drive is corrupt".. I've run that several times for me to go back to the menu and it still tells me that.

So, I'm wondering what should I do?
I don't want to give Sony 150 for them to replace my hard drive and send it back 2 weeks later. Any alternatives??

Or should I just go with the 360 flow?

Was the game on a Blu-ray or bought from the PS Store? (bit sure if you can buy Madden from PSN...)

If on a disk, it sounds like your Blu-ray drive has died :(. there's a oretty long thread on the forum about it if that is the case (link).
Good luck.

So if the blue ray drive is dead, the issue with my hard drive is an entirely different problem?

Possibly...does the HDD give any errors etc when you switch the console on? Can you play videos etc from the HDD? if so, your hard drive may be ok.
Luckily, I haven't had to use the recovery menu yet, so I'm not sure of the options.
Either way, replacing the hard drive is an easy job, its the BD drive you could have more issues with.

Well I don't get any errors when I turn the system on, and I've already formatted my system so the thing about Videos cant be tried (since it's not reading disks).

Is there a test to find out if the Blue Ray drive is working or something without opening up the Console, or do i need to find some screw drivers?

Stick a video on a pen drive and copy it to the PS3's HDD. Play it from there and that should confirm the HDD is good. I assume it will be if it is not error-ing when powered on.
Alternatively, download a demo from the PSN, and see if it will install and play.
To test the Blu-ray drive just put a game in...if it errors or fails to recognise you can confirm your drive is shot. See the thread I linked to earlier to get info on how to fix it.

Test a PS1 game, DVD Video, Bluray game and movie. Post back what works and what doesn't.

The only thing that worked was using the flash drive to listen to media, and downloading games from the PS store. Those worked too.

Nothing, CD, DVD, Blue-ray, or even PS3 games works.

There is only one laser that does everything...when a system can only read cd and dvd, this is because of a deformed lense.

You say that it is giving you an error that the hard drive is corrupted? If so, you might try plugging the drive into a PC, doing a full format to NTFS, then deleting the NTFS and putting the drive back in the PS3. This is the only real way to format a PS3 drive...the format utility won't do a real format if there is even a hint of a PS3 system on the drive.

Some PS3 drives have two lasers, one for Blu Ray and the other one for everything else, not sure which models though.

Some of the 40GBs have that.
