I have the Lite-On Model DG-16D2S HW:AOA1 FW:74850C Mfr Date: May,2008
I bought my Xbox360 in 2006, but I had rrod and microsoft fixed it for me in Dec 08. It looks like they replaced the dvd drive too. And now I have an open tray error. I tried cleaning it and adjusting the pot to no avail.
I ordered a BenQ VAD6038 and the connectivity kit v3, but I'm wondering if just switching boards is an option?

No, you will need to dump the DVDkey of the Lite-ON and then spoof the info to the BenQ firmware. If you plan on going on Live, I would wait for iXtreme LT firmware to be released. Also, going on Live with a BenQ spoofed as a Lite-ON is not recommended.

Microsoft gave me this crap drive(probly a refurb considering the warranty sticker was cut on it). I've barely used it. They said my warranty is up. They only gave me 3 mos on a rrod fix. I already forked out the cash for the BenQ and kit.
How much of a risk is it to spoof? Would using original BenQ firmware be safer for use on Live?
What about lasers? Maybe I could swap those? I could buy a lite-on and insert my key. Or buy a lite-on laser. And, keep my benQ and spoof that for use offline with back ups, if I had money...
I just wana play and the closest thing to that is to come here and talk about fixin it.. I haven't played my 360 in mos and I just got mw2. To my demise it wouldn't work in my system.

No you cannot use the Liteon firmware on the BenQ. If you want to keep the official firmware to avoid a ban and play legit games you will have to dump official firmwares of both drives,open jungle flasher and in source firmware load Liteon and in target firmware load benq firmware then click on manual spoof and select liteon from the list and paste the key from the liteon and click OK once you have done this earase the BenQ drive and write the firmware. by doing this you will have the official firmware on your drive and you wont be able to play backups and you wont get banned. If you want to play backups then you will have to dump the Liteon key only and download 1.61 for BenQ, open jungle flasher, load lite on firmware as source and 1.61 for BenQ as target, click on manual spoof, select Liteon from the list paste your liteon key and click on OK, save the firmware, earase the firmware from the benq and write the CFW. now you will be able to play backups.
you have to spoof the drive because every drive is tied with the motherboard. if a liteon is tied to a motherboard the motherboard will look for a liteon, even if the key matches the drive rev will be different so you have to spoof the drive as what ever drive was in the 360 before.
