Hi, I did try searching this on Afterdawn, and found several topics about using laptops as displays for PS3s, but didn't see any posted solutions at all. I really hope I didn't miss one. I quote-boxed my own knowledge about the issue, so people who don't care to read it can skip to the questions I have.

Quote:
The method I know for doing this is to take an EasyCap or equivalent product (USB to composite cable, I think it's called?) and to run the signal through a capture program's preview window, which gives a shoddy but functional image with a PS2, but turns text, maps and details in my Dynasty Warriors 6 on my new PS3 into a gigantic clusterbonk of unreadable blurs. Haven't tried other games on it yet, but not hopeful.

Basically, the method above is functional and doesn't break gameplay, but it's not much fun to think about all the HD you just threw in the toilet. I hope if there isn't a better method, it helped somebody though.

I was wondering if anyone has a better solution for hooking up laptops to PS3s. My laptop has this port which I believe is DVI-I?

1. Is there a cable that can connect the port pictured above to the PS3? Is this an HDMI to DVI cable?

2. Will doing that allow me to actually pipe in any higher quality a signal than a composite cable would?

3. Does anyone have suggestions for less stupid ways to display the signal from said port (or USB run composite cable) than using the preview window of a capture program?

Any other information needed from me? I'll admit right now, I am that stupid girl who doesn't know how things work, so chances are I've left out something critical and/or have no idea what I'm talking about. If that's the case, I appreciate being told so.

Thanks for reading this far!

If I'm not mistaken, I think the DVI ports on laptops are Output ports. This means that they can only display video signals of your desktop onto other hardware (TV's, Monitors etc). This port will not accept Input signals from your PS3 and so it can't display the PS3's video signal on your laptop.

PS2 - Swap Magic 2.0 DVD - Swap Magic 3.0 CD - Memory Card Exploit - Swap Magic 3.6 ELF - Swap Magic 3.8 ELF

PSP SLIM - OFW 3.71 - CFW 3.71 M33 - CFW 3.71 M33-2 - CFW 3.71 M33-3 - CFW 3.71 M33-4 - CFW 3.80 M33 - CFW 3.80 M33-2 - CFW 3.80 M33-3 - CFW 3.80 M33-4 - CFW 3.80 M33-5 - CFW 3.90 M33 - CFW 3.90 M33-2

Dang... I figured it would be too easy. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

Any better software solutions for displaying the composite signal?

Hoping to hold out on buying anything until I move next year, and then just getting an HDTV. I don't really have the space for anything nice right now, and it'd be a waste of money imo to buy something just for half a year.

EasyCap + Ulead is functional. I was just hoping for better without spending much money or buying anything that takes up space.

I've been messing with it and VLC seems like it might be a better option, but the colors aren't right. Looks like I need to adjust something or am missing something to make it function correctly.
