Hey everyone so i've been trying to find a solution to my problem but just can't seem to find anything useful. I have tried to fix my xbox 360 with the X clamp fix. I researched it thoroughly and finally gave it a shot.

I took out my xbox 360 and fixed teh x clamp by putting in a M5 X 12mm bolt for the heat sink bolts. On either side of the board i would have the washers in this order, Bolt, Metal washer, nylon washer, motherboard, nylon washer, metal washer, heat sink. After completing the fix i tried fitting the motherboard back into the case but the new bolts were making the connections not fit right.

After a bit of brainstorming i came up with the idea to just drill out the preexisting holes to the size of the head of my bolts. Everything looked great until I started the xbox.

After maybe 2 seconds of starting the xbox it was over heating (two ring) the fan was going crazy. Basically I would start the xbox and it would overheat in just under 2 seconds. xbox started great but then overheated.

I know this is a long post but i really need some help! If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated!

I've fixed many xboxs by removing the x clamps, and none have been returned to me.

I had this problem with one of them, it basically took alot of tightening and loosening the bolts, I then read that it does this when the heatsink isn't seated correctly so I removed a top washer (between heatsink and motherboard). Then tightened and lossened till it worked. Try this out and let me know how you get on.

Try searching, its fun.

I tried a couple different washer configuration to no luck. Do you think its because the board may be touching the case? I would think that the electrical components touching the metal could cause some problems?

What finally got it to work for you? Do I need to reapply the thermal paste and try again?

Thanks

Well generally the bolts would keep the board from touching the case.

I didn't reapply the thermal paste, but if it wasn't done correctly i.e. too much paste, this can also lead the CPU/GPU to thinking that the heatsinks aren't seated properly.

Try searching, its fun.

another thing just throwing it in there cause i didnt do it properly during my first try but cycle through all the screws you put in making each one slightly tighter and continuing from one to the next until its really tight i might like no more torque? if thats the right word...but yea super tight first time i did it was kinda lose and the uh thing 3rrod again but i tightened the sucker up and didnt have the problem anymore so far 3 weeks going :) and you should really apply new thermal paste

oh yea and after doing all that let the console sit running if you have 3 red rings and unplug the fan and just let it over heat for on 2 red rings for 2 mins so it can reset

Alright so I tried reapplying the thermal paste and all to no luck. I;m starting to think its my thermal paste, I have the Antec 77063 Silver Thermal Compound. The thing with this thermal compound is that its over a year old. I pulled of teh heat sinks to reapply the past and on the gpu there was no residue at all.

I thought the cause could be that I'm no putting on the heat syncs fast enough so I applied it and put the heat sync totally on in just under 3 min. It can't dry that fast.

Any suggestions? Thinking of buying some Artic 5 thermal paste.

Thanks
