Wal-Mart selling $78 Blu-ray player on Black Friday, other great deals

article published on 22 November, 2009

Wal-Mart has unveiled that it will sell a $78 Magnavox Blu-ray player on Black Friday, the cheapest retail price for a BD player this year, undercutting Meijer?s $89 Sylvania Black Friday promotion. Notably however, neither the Magnavox or the Sylvania models are BD-Live compliant, and will lack Web features such as Netflix-streaming, which is available via Best Buy's $99 Insignia model, ... [ read the full article ]

What the article fails to mention is that sure they will have a $80 BluRay player. But they will only have like 5 of them. Quantities are extremely limited so I wouldnt waste my time. Besides if you want a BluRay player just buy a PS3 it does everything.

Also, by buying at walmart, you undermine the already crumbling economy.

samshizze - I love my PS3, but if someone just wants bluray, then they can get a basic unit for $100...that's just 1/3 the price of a ps3.

Undermine the economy? Don't blame Wal-Mart, blame us for letting everything ship overseas. How many of those DTV converter boxes were made in the USA? And how much money did our government pour into that conversion?

Back to the subject, I had this Magnavox player (then $100) and took it back after a few weeks for a Samsung player. Sound and picture was gorgeous, but slow load times, no firmware updates, and the competitor's ability for internet content (BD Live, Netflix, YouTube) made it worth trading the Mag for Samsung.

Remember the HD-DVD vs BluRay competition. HD-DVD was having a $99 black friday sale "this will be the end of the war, HD-DVD will reach mass adoption." Oh well, good deal but low quality product. Spend a little more and get a good BluRay player.

While quality is better on bluray, the tipping point was the PS3, not some 1-day-only store special.

My HD-DVD player still works quite nicely for upscaling DVDs on my other TV :D

I think the tipping point for Blu ray was the Porn industry's selection of Blu Ray!

I know. Just odd that at that time, some thought (wished) that $99 players would change the world. No logic involved.
