I read the stickies and looked through this forum. I am tech savy but have no experience with modding any sort of consoles, I could not figure out what I needed through the jargon.
I recently got a modded 360, banned from xbox live of course. I have no way to contact the person who gave it to me. It is modded, I can put in burned DVDs, but not all games work, for example, tales of vesperia and assassins creed 2, which it wants to play as a video or mixed media dvd.
1. How can I tell how my 360 is modified?
2. There must be some "latest" mod which will play all games, right? So that the "wave"(whatever that is) and the region do not matter? What is that and how do I modify my 360 to eliminate these issues?
I have USB external hard drives, enclosures and thumb drives so I am hoping I have all of the hardware I would need.

1: your xbox drive will be modded with ixtreme firmware, the only way you will find out which one is with jungleflasher. ( google it )
2:you can either
a: update your firmware to 1.61 ( not available for lite-on or hitachi drives)
b: wait for the ixtreme LT to be released.
c: patch your games to work on which ever firmware you have with 360 waves patcher.
1. Have a handy link to identifying different sorts of hard drives?
2. Do I need any special hardware to install the 1.61 firmware, or do I just remove the drive from it's case, put it into a USB enclosure and install it via my computer?
well it depends on the drive you have, almost all drives dont require extra hardware"besides a via chipset pci card" which is obviously pc side, but if you have a lite-on drive your either screwed because of the firmware key not able to be read "not likely", you have to pony up some cash for a 360Xtractor and a spear/probe what ever you want to call it, or you are lucky enough to get a lite-on drive which is able to dump the key without additional purchases. hope i helped :)
