I am going to try and be as detailed as possible, so my appologies if this gets long winded. I have been attempting to get help through Activision, but they keep talking in circles so I am now at every one here's mercy. :-)

First the problem.

I got Modern Warfare 2 when it first came out. It worked fine for awhile, then on Friday the 13th (imagine that) I was no longer able to get into a multiplayer game. I get one of three problems.

For those of you who have the game, you'll know the part I am talking about.

Problems I get:

1 - at the top right of the screen is says searching for games X% - 0/50 as it cycles through good games for my connection. The problem is it never finds a game it always arrives at 100% - 0/50. It cycles through this several times, then goes to a message saying Waiting to find 7 more players and then just stays there.

2 - Same as above, except some times it completely freezes my xbox to the point where I have to manually shut it off.

3 - Same as #1 but sometimes it completely disconnects me from Xbox live.

The odd thing is, I can play the Spec Ops mode on-line with a friend just fine and have no problems at all. The only hope I have of playing a MP game is to get someone to party up with me and bring me into a game, and even then it's a crap shoot on if I can get in. Usually 20% of the time I get in and 80% of the time I get booted out and experience one of the three problems listed above.

At first I thought it was my system or something. But, I can play World at War, NHL 10, MLB 2k9 online just fine with no problems.

The Activision support person I have been trading emails with seems to be focusing on my hardware/connection, but I am not sure that is the case. It just baffles me that this one mode, for this one game - when no other games are having problems - represents a hardware issue.

I am currently using a modem supplied by my internet company in conjunction with a Netgear WGR 614 v5 (latest firmware installed). I have also tried connecting the Xbox directly to the modem and experienced the same problem.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem or what I could try to fix it? If you think I need a new router, what are some good options for a home network with 2 computers and my Xbox?

Thanks for any help, I am getting extremely frustrated by this right now.

If you can connect to Live with this and other games it is not your network or hardware. Don't know anything about MW2 so I'll defer to a more knowledgeable source...

That's kind of my thought too. I am going to borrow my Brother-in-laws MW2 disc and see if it works. Maybe I just got a bad press of the disc.

Activision has pretty much said they have no current fix, and it 'may' be a server issue on their side and that they are looking into it.

*sigh*

This sucks.

Cinch, the problem you are having have nothing to do with your game settings, the game disk or your Xbox.

The problem lies with your NAT settings within your router.

You may have noticed that on the screen before you click "Find A Match" it will say "NAT setting Strict"

Using open or strict NAT on the router will make a difference to some games including Xbox live and some PC games. Not all but some.

I myself have had the exact same problem with the same symptoms you described to the letter.

When your PC or Xbox opens an outgoing connection, the router puts an entry in its NAT table which includes the PC IP address and port and the router external port and the remote IP address.

With open NAT, the router accepts ANY packet arriving at the external port and passes it onto the corresponding PC IP address and port, regardless of where the packet came from.

With strict NAT, the router checks that the packet arriving at the port actually came from the correct remote host.

Many PC games and XBox live do direct peer to peer communications during game play. This will not work on strict NAT unless you open the appropriate ports.

There are also minor performance penalties with strict NAT as it requires the router to actually look inside the packet. This is not likely to be a problem unless you have a fast connection (say, extreme cable) and the router is already close to its performance limits.

So try resetting the router, if that does not work then try ging into the router setup/config and do it manually. Each router is different so it may take a bit more research on your part.

Another option (and what I did because I live in a high-rise with limited access to the router) is to set-up a static IP on your Xbox and port fowarding on the router. Here is a good website with walkthroughs for many brands of routers. This is also a better option for security because it only fowards your Xbox's ip and not your computer's ip. This allows for tighter security for your computer while on the internet.

Hope this helps you out with your problem.

I was thinking this was related to NAT restrictions also. But the OP mentioned that he bypassed the router and there was no change. To me that indicates that the router is not the issue. Maybe its your ISP? take your console to a friends house after trying your disc you borrowed.

Me too. This has been going on with MW2 since I got the game. I have tried everything I have found regarding port forwarding, dmz, bypassing the router, etc. Results are the same. I am planning on contacting my ISP. Probably get the runaround, but I don't know what else to try. If someone knows the answer, please post. It may prevent a suicide. :-)

@ Everybody that is having problems with MW2:
What are your download and upload speeds? When my connection gets capped to 56 kb/ps (due to data limit reached) I can't find a game in MW2, but every other game works fine online (except for halo co-op). If your dl/ul speeds are low it may have a similar effect.

Cinch, I found a solution. It seems to be an issue with the router. I don't know what fixed it, but what I did was reset my router to the factory defaults, and started completely over. Pulled a new IP address from my ISP for the router, then configured my Xbox with a static IP and then put that into the DMZ. Set up the DHCP server for dynamic IPs for the PCs on my wireless network. After going through this, MW2 has been working perfectly on the multi player. Hope this helps.

Cinch, I found a solution for mine. I don't know what fixed it, but what I did was reset my router to the factory defaults, and started completely over. As part of this, I called my ISP and had them reset my connection which allowed me to pull a new IP address for the router, then configured my Xbox with a static IP and then put that into the DMZ. Set up the DHCP server for dynamic IPs for the PCs on my wireless network. After going through this, MW2 has been working perfectly on the multi player. In your post, you said that you bypassed the router and still had the problem, so the only other thing that I can see is that I had my ISP reset the connection so I could pull a new IP address from them. Makes me think that the problem is somehow on their end, and the reset by them took care of it. Hope this helps.
