i have found that the best way to eliminate freezes and skips, is to always burn at 1X. Yeah, that takes along time. But no worries when it comes to playback in any player.....

First off I suggest using Ritek G04 disks . If that doesn't help I suggest reducing the movie to 4.3Gb the closer to the edge of the disk the more likley the freeze. I used to get this alot on cheaper media since using G04's I havent had a problem

ask010673 is on the correct path here i reckon.

with good quality media there is no reason at all to have to drop your write speed.

invest in some ritek g04 as ash suggested and i think you'll cure this problem.

i'm sorry guys, but i have to disagree with you. maybe its just my system but i have tried ritek and tdk, and the cheap optodisc brand. i had the same results everytime. you just have to find what works for your system setup...
remember, i said i have a pioneer player that will play dvd's burned at 4X all day long.

Thanks, Obewone

like you say obewone......each to thier own success story.......but i think most peeps around here will agree that using ritek g04 will eliminate any possablity of poor media issues.

i sometimes play movies on ps2 and find it really dont like cheap discs......but again i have no hassle with riteks on the ps2

wassup..
thought i'd throw in my .02..
hehe..

imo, its two things..
-media quality is key, i bought some 4x discs (super cheap) and they freeze all the time!
i personally like to use memorex dvd+r discs, no coasters or freezing (except ones i puts labels on and the label starting peeling) or ritek's.. both work in the xbox i modded too..

-however, one has to take into account teh way the disc is burnt too! i know with Nero burn 5.x.xx if you didn't set a defaulted dvd video option to a different setting, you would have probs with movies freezing and skipping...

so its a bit of both worlds, software and hardware...
pick your poisons..
i'd rather pay an extra $.50 a disc and have a solid long lasting backup vs saving the money and having a disc that won't play through all the way..

peace

WDVD?s. My problem is when I do a long movie such as Andersonville (167mins) even I have the latest versions of shrink and decrypter which I use all the time when doing thou I split it into 2 parts (RWG 17/5/04) it starts to freeze at approx 80% - 90% becoming more frequent as the movie plays -I even experimented rejoining then to burn on 1 disc following instructions by FASFRANK and the same thing happens even in some shorter movies (90min)--As I want to back up Gettysburg (254mins) I would prefer no glitches etc. Media = princo / sky / laser brands -- nothing is running in the background ---would using deep analysis solve this problem

XP PRO, AMD 2200+ 1GB RAM, 45GB 7200HD (dedicated),
Gforce4 mx440
will try and get the media as suggested

hmm...

what type files system are you using (ntfs, fat32, fat16)?
what firmware do you have on your burner, the newest? do shorter movies have problems or just a few, only the longer ones?

here's what i do and what i use and i have no probs with any movies, including multi-episode ones (ie simpsons, etc):
hardware:
WinXP Pro (on ntfs partitions)
Athlon XP 2600+ Barton (oc'd to 2900+)
Aopen AK79-400VN Mob
1GB PC2100 (dual channel: 2 x 512MB)
Western Digital HDs: 100 + 80GB w/8MB cache each
Nec ND1300A DVD+-R/RW Burner w/1.0A firmware
Nero 6.3.0.2 Ultra Ed.
Newest DVD Decrypter
DVD2one version 1.0.0

Steps:
-Rip to hd using DVD Decrypter (movie only if its not an episode movie)
-if under 4.36GB, using ifo editor and create new dvd and burn with Nero 6 to dvd+r (currently using memorex 4x dvd+r media)
-if over and not an episode movie, use DVD2One to shrink to one disc, then burn with Nero 6
-if over and an episode movie, use Nero recode, import all the dvd files (i rip the whole disk to hd), and remove what i don't want and then rip new movie to hd again, then use Nero 6 to burn those files to a blank

hope that helps ya a bit..
peace

The 3 DVD types you listed are prone to this kind of a problem. Ritek, Prodisc, and Verbatim are 100% all the way through the movie no matter how big. This is on any of my cheapie players.
Slowing the speed down dosen't usually help this particular problem when I have used the other medias.
Even the supermedia AZO DVD-Rs read perfect all the way through on the big movies but they have lower burner compatibility so I no longer use them.

try not to place label on your disc, it may stick. use thermal or inkjet.

BE-J,
Everyone who replied makes sence in a way.
However, before trying anything else that others pointed out, try using Stomp's RecordNow Max to burn your DVDs'.
I had exact same freezing problems with cheaper brand dvd-r that I bought and I was using trusty Nero for all the dvd burings. No matter slowing down the recording speed wouldn't fix the freezing problem and it would piss me off. My high-end Sony 9000es wouldn't freeze but my Lite-on LVD-2001 would freeze like crazy towards 80%+ of the movies and I couldn't not finish the movies.
Before deciding to return the cheap HQ-brand dvd-r's,
I tried Stomp's RecordNow Max 4.5 version and guess what, movies now played to the end without any freezes.

So if anyone is experiencing same freeze problems, please ditch Nero and start burning with RecordNow Max.
I am pretty much sure that this will end your freeze problems.

PS: Even with the freezing dvd that was burned with Nero, you can copy back to hardrive and re-burn it with RecordNow Max and you will have a perfect dvd that won't freeze like before.
Try it!

the problem is very simple. the dvd's freeze because you are using cheap media. an explanation of this is as follows: cheap media manufacturers generally use a cheap dye. the problem this causes is that the disk heats up and warps over time whilst you are burning.

If you burn at 1 speed, this wont solve the problem as your taking longer to burn and this gives the disk more time to heat up!

as someone suggested try not to burn the dvd to the end. I never used to go over 3.7 gig on one of these disks and they work every time.

hope this helps.
