you shouldn't ask this in a 360 forums, lots of fanboys around.
Honest opinion is based on you: Do you mind paying to play online and you are going to use it for other use such as watching movies? If not, go for ps3. You cant flash the drive or do backups BUT with bluray, free online play, and some very nice exclusives (Uncharted, God Of War, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone, etc) its very nice. I like Home for its community and free games you can play with others like Poker and bowling.
If you dont care to watch movies on your system and don't mind paying for online play and you prefer to do "backups", RUN to 360.
360 is also seem to be more popular for online play but I have never had a problem finding people to play with on ps3...
With the exception of Gears of War, Halo, and the upcoming Splinter Cell, I think you need another reason to pick it up. I picked mine up for the reasons above but I also have a PS3 (1st) and I still love every second of it... Transformers on Bluray n HDTV... OMG!
Oh, Wii...its my dust collector... great for little kids and older adults that are not gamers. When my little nieces/nephews come over or my parents come to visit...other than that... Its just an expensive paperweight... I might get Resident Evil though to play with my wife...MIGHT...

i agree i have a 360 only coz i want to play back ups i dont bother playin online as i dont agree with getting a back up and then paying M$ for the right to play online.
otherwise id get a ps3 and pay £45-50 a game and play online (and get my arse handed to me) for nothing.
as for the wii as the poster above said its not really a true gamers machine its more of a family entertainment thing an is better suited to younger players or drunk adults rofl.
the end result is ps3 for free online play and dear games or xbox360 for back ups and play offline as its getting to be a pain wi all the patches etc.

I can definitely give you an answer, and I'm pretty open-minded and non biased, plus, I have all the consoles, PS3, 360, Wii and a gaming PC.
(I don't recommend the Wii at all. For me, it was only fun when I was drunk with friends, and when I first got it. Overpriced, too, imo)
Both consoles have good things about them, but I would defintely say the xbox 360. I'd recommend the xbox360 even if you couldn't flash it or mod it. It has a huge variety of games. The exclusives are great. The interface is much better than the ps3s, and XBL is GREAT. You DO have to pay for it, but it is much better than the ps3. If you want reasons, I'll give them to you. Also, as far as multiplatform games, the xbox 360 version almost ALWAYS has better graphics and framerate. It also has more arcade games, indie games, and generally more add-on content than the ps3.
I hardly play my ps3, mainly because I'm always playing my xbox 360.
But that doesn't mean the ps3 sucks.... While the multiplats range from slightly-worse in visuals to dramatically worse, it's exclusives are amazing looking. The online is free. (although, recent news says there will be a charged membership coming in 2010, like XBL) and it's MUCH more reliable.
If you want details on exactly why my opinion is the way it is, then ask me, and I'll tell you.
But basically, I'd definitely suggest the 360 over the ps3.

I just want to add to the "premium service" comment in PSN. The online play will remain free (The VP made that official) but it will have "exclusive" content for the paid service (assuming demos/betas/discounts on add-ons).

that sounds like the exact opposite to xbl, silver get's all content access, just no gaming=-)

No, the core PSN is still there - free online gaming, demos, "arcade" games, etc. Basically the same thing as XBL Gold. The "paid" memberships simply have some sort of extra to them - no one's said officially what, but it could possibly be exclusive access to multiplayer Betas, discounts on PSN purchases (like Jedi said), or exclusive videos/Netflix purchases, or something of the like.
To reiterate, everything that's free to access - gaming, the store, everything - is still free; they're just adding another layer or two to the PSN that are for paying customers only.
