Probably cuz it's 3 years old or so...

Normally the problem doesn't appear when the xbox hasn't been used for several hours.

The disc reads fine and then after an hour or longer you decide to switch games, so yea you switch discs and.... it can't read the disc anymore! It say's open tray only... And makes unusual sounds sometimes.

Now sometimes I try for 30+ and get lucky and he recognises the disc.

Or I have to shut it down for at least 4+ hours to have it work again..

I know get a new xbox blah blah... but I wonder maybe there is an way to fix it possibly? Maybe clean the drive or something? (how would I do that?)

Could be that you need a new laser for your drive. There are replacement kits/tuts available online, ebay, etc. you'll need to find one for your specific drive, likely a TS-h943 if its 3+ years old...for about US$10

If you're not into taking the DVD drive apart, just get a new one, ~US$30 here in the US, flash the old drive key onto the new drive and you're set...

all better options that buying an new xbox.

But still Isn't it strange that the drive reads discs fine after it isn't been used for several hours?
While playing the game the disc still reads... but if u put it out then the next disc won't be read...
