Hi there, im about to run ydl 6.1 on my ps3, i didnt like having only 10GB of HDD for it to run on so i decided to use my external HDD of 60Gb to store it on, but then i thought would it be possible to use the left over 10GB allotment from the ps3's hdd to become RAM/memory for th OS?, since this has been done with flash memory 'http://yellowdoglinux.com/support/solutions/ydl_6.x/ps3-flash-mem.shtml' i was wondering if this can be done with the 10GB allot for the other OS, plz let me know if this has been tried and whatever happened, thanks a load

um....no the ps3 has to boot the os from the internal drive, and from what i know its not possible to use a hdd as ram, i realy realy dont think that is possible, basicly, take the 10 or take most of the drive, and iether way u look at it, you will get 215mb of ram, you could do what i did, i upgraded my hdd a while back, so i used my old 80gb to put linux on, so i get about 70 gigs for linux.

Well aparently u can install linux on an external hard drive and not even have to create a partition if u didnt want to, as when i was installing linux it asked where u want to install on, i had my external HDD connected and it came up with an option to install either on the ps3's HDD or the External HDD.

You can indeed install Linux on an external HDD.
My good friend madshaun1984 created this tutorial:
http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=10394
I dont think you can use the 10GB partition as ram though.

ahh, well it was just a thought, since 10GB of linux was too small and 10GB for the PS3 was also too small, i decided to use an external HDD to make up for that, just fought it be grear having 10GB of ram to make up with that partition, then i'll probally just have to use the flash memory swap instead, thanks anyway

I showed madshaun, this thread on IRC and this is what he said:

(19:47.14) (madshaun1984) so he could partition his 60gb ext hdd, as 10gb swap, then rest as linux install,
(19:48.07) (madshaun1984) he can also enable the ps3 vram which gives a speed increase
(19:49.17) (madshaun1984) also he can adjust the size of the swap on the internal hdd, if he really wants to, but as the install (if he follows my tut will be on the ext hdd, he wont see enough of an improvment to make a difference)
(19:50.30) (madshaun1984) http://www.edepot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1254 <--- that will help
