quick one..

my 40gb ps3 is dead as...

tried the heat gun a few times with no joy.

quest is.. can i plug my 40gb hard drive into a mates 60gb ps3 backup the game data onto my external hd then transfer to my new ps3 which is a 250gb slim..

That way wont work, if you put your HDD into another PS3, it will ask you to format.
