I am interested in installing Linux on my PS3, but I'm wondering if there are different versions of Linux that I can install that offer different benefits. Once I know what to install I can find out how to do it myself, I'm just a little baffled at where to start as I've never used Linux before.

Thanks in advance, Lloyd.

The main distro's are PSUbuntu, Fedora and YellowDog. There may be others that run aswell.
If you have never used Linux before, I'd go for ubuntu. You will find loads of information and guides to help you with problems.
YellowDog was built specifically for the PS3, which means it runs well, but there is limited help available if you are experiencing problems.
Fedora would be my choice though, it's pretty common on PC so there should be loads of info, its also easy to use and looks pretty cool.

You need to be aware however that a PS3 running Linux will not give you the same usability as a functioning desktop, and there is nothing on linux you wouldn't be able to do on a laptop/desktop anyway.

I installed Linux on my PS3, used it for about 30 mins then never again. I formatted my drive about a week later to regain reclaim my 10gb partition for the XMB.

Good luck :).

Ok, I'll probably choose YellowDog then as I always opt for improved performance. I probably wont use it much, just as a torrent client and web browser. Thanks for your help, I'll just have a tinker with it anyway.

Debian, Fedora, and Gentoo support the PPC. Because Mac has dropped the chip, it's being dropped by some Linux distributions. Both KDE and GNOME OOUIs support 2D graphics (shading, & anti-aliased typefaces, I'm assuming), and many free Linux games are augmented in OpenGL for 3D. (Foobilliard is a nice example.) KDE on Fedora looks very pretty, but Debian offers the best programming platform.
