First, I want to apololgize for my last thread. I did not wish to be rude or break the rules; I just panicked.
Originally, my screen (after switching the PS3 on) would become red-pink. This is where I normally would pick the user, however no users came up. I tries removing the hardrive, and putting it back in, but nothing happened. Then I tried doing the thing where you can re-format your hardrive. Now my system states my hardrive is corrupt. What would be my next steps? I'm trying to keep this quick and cheap. Buying a new hardrive is not an issue, but I only need a 40 GB at most. If you state the type of hardrive, please state the price and where it can be bought as well. Any help is EXTREMELY appreciated.
I would pull the drive & install it in a PC if you can. From a PC, you can confirm if the problem is just with how the drive is formated, or if the drive itself is bad.
Here are a few drives that are affordable, quiet, low-heat, and PS3-working confirmed:
no you cant connect a hdd using a usb port, it uses sata connectors, you will need one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153066 to be able to hook your hdd up to a pc, also if you had any info on that drive it no longer exists since u reformatted it. but in my opion, get a slim, they are more reliable then the 40-60gb ps3s and u get a 120-250 gb hdd.
sky, he can connect it using the internal SATA connector if he's so inclined.
He can also do what you suggested and get a USB enclosure. (Probably the easier route, too. The only concern would be the price for what will likely only be used once, although USB hard drive enclosures don't seem to be very expensive nowadays.)
i got one at home so it comes in handy, its easier then opening up ur pc, to attatch the sata, its much easier and for less to go wrong, u can probly get one at bestbuy for 30 bucks. and if hes got an old computer he may only have ide cables and not sata, you would be suprised how many people never upgrade there hardware and software...
True, true. I've got computers from five, even ten years ago (which I'm sure isn't that old compared to some that others of you might have), and those all have IDE interfaces.
Eirscythe, do you have eSATA on your computer, by any chance? (If you've got that, you most undoubtedly have a SATA hard drive in there, too.)
But sky's suggestion is probably the best for connecting it to your computer. There's some from Newegg that go for extremely cheap - starting from $7.99.
It works great, and it does not cost nearly as much as that POS thermaltake unit...plus it is smaller and more portable. I know it is sold out right now, but they should be getting more soon, and I think Amazon still has some in stock. I have tried a lot of external enclosures (both SATA and ATA), many of them are junk. They break easily, and will randomly disconnect durring writes...this one has not caused any problems at all.
As a bonus of the USb route, you can use the drive with your PS3 to backup saves...BUT THIS IS ALL ASSUMING THE DRIVE WORKS AT ALL. It might just be a dead hard drive, in which case you would be waisting your money to buy any USB adapter for it. Considering the low price of a replacement drive, this might be the best bet...for just $60 you could have more space than any stock PS3 ever made...for a bit more you could get a 500GB and have twice the space of the biggest stock PS3 hard drive available.
