I have several .avi files on a USB drive, when I look at them some of the files have the correct name and others have weird names. Just jibberish type names that were obviously changed by the PS3 how do I correct this?

The names haven't been changed at all. The filenames are the same, but what the PS3 displays is the avi tags (the info like "title," "year," or "track number" and "Album" in music). If you're using Windows, you should be able to edit these by right-clicking on the .avi file and going to Properties.

I could be wrong, though.

no luck, i cant delete anything and I cant add anything. Maybe its just me but I cant figure it out. I am running 32-bit WIN Vista Ultimate. Not sure what to do because all of the file names are the same except for a few. Most show up as AniMeC not sure if it helps. I tried to google it and got nothing.

That's as much as I've got, sorry. Try your luck with any of those.

What do you mean by "all of the file names are the same"? Do you mean that each file has, say, "House M.D. Season 01 - Episode <episode number> [H264][AAC5.1][HD].avi" in their file name, with only <episode number> being different?

Or is it that they all have the same name but different extensions? ie one file is "movie.avi," another is "movie.srt," another is "movie.mkv," and another is "movie.wmv"?

KajNrig is right, the ps3 doesnt ever display the actual filename, trust me, right mouse click on the file video/music, and go to the details tab, there u can edit the tags, rating, and title.

What I have is like

0204 The Outrageous Okona
0205 Loud as a Whisper
0207 Unnatural Selection
0209 The Measure of a Man
AniMeC
AniMeC
AniMeC
AniMeC
AniMeC
AniMeC
AniMeC
AniMeC

Obviously Episodes 1-3,6,8,10,11 are titled AniMec on the PS3.
BUT when I go into the properties of them I do not see that name anywhere. They are not named that on my laptop of course. And I'm sorry but I still dont see where to edit tags or anything else.

When I right click on 0211 Contagion and go to Details I see:
Video--------------------------
Length 00:45:30
Frame Width 512
Frame Height 384
Data Rate 134kbps

wheew!!

Now the *s are not stars obviously. And directly below that there is a blue link:

Remove Properties and Personal Information

When I click it I get two choices either make a copy with all that can be deleted, deleted. Or choose what to delete. Either way I can change nothing.

This is really starting to pi** me off....lol

sky this has nothing to do with lazy I HAVE already renamed them. If you would have read my post then you would know that on my LAPTOP they are "0211 Contagion" as the title. I can move them to where ever I want and they are still titled "0211 Contagion" or whatever. BUT when I put them on my thumb drive and try to look at them on the PS3 they have these odd names. Not all of them just some. Im not sure if it is an encoding problem or what the issue is hence me asking for help. Also there is no way to rename them from the PS3 side. You are not ever given that option.

Don't worry about sky; he offers some good advice sometimes, and he rightly blows off an idiot noob every now and then, but mostly he's just a bag of hot air.

Have you tried any of those programs I pointed out through Google? I'm pretty sure one (if not all) of them will allow you to edit the video tags. Again, it's not the filename that the PS3 displays (it will only display the filename if there are no tags) but the title tag, and to edit that, you have to do it manually through one of those programs. I had thought that you could do it just via the Windows Explorer, but apparently not.

KajNrig thank you very much I finally got time to sit down and try out one of those programs. That weird title was in every dang tag slot.
