I swear I'm not gonna ask how to retrieve a lost DVD key. Ok, so here's the deal:
This morning I bought a used Xbox from a guy, he told me it wouldn't read discs. So, I get it home and hook it up, when I insert an original game it says "Play DVD" and then it goes to the screen you get when you insert an Xbox game into a computer, "To Play This Disc...".
So I assumed that the guy I got the box from had tried to flash the drive, effed it up, then pawned it off on me. To be thorough, I decided to do a full diagnostic. I dumped the firmware from the drive (it's a Hitachi), when I did it identified it as stock firmware and when I sent Mode-B to put it into vendor mode I didn't have to open the tray and pull the power, it worked just like a stock Hitachi does. At this point I started to gain hope. Next I grabbed one of my working Xboxes and pulled out the DVD drive. I spoofed the drive with the Hitachi's key and installed it into the Xbox I got this morning. I hooked it up and inserted a game and, sure enough, it fired right up and I was able to play with no problem.
Now, I'm pretty sure that this means that I have a bad laser in the Hitachi. I'd like to ask just two questions.
1. Can I get some confirmation from the folks here? Do I need a new laser?
2. Do I have to order a laser specific to the drive model or will any laser work?
Cool, thanks for the link. I was gonna order a different one but the one you posted is half as much so I ordered one. Now, if it doesn't work it's on you!
