Google-branded smartphone is a 'certainty,' says Gizmodo

article published on 2 December, 2009

According to sources speaking to Gizmodo, a Google-branded smartphone "is a certainty," despite Google's continual denial of such a device. The sources say over the next month "Google Phones (most probably in early, prototype form) will flood the Mountain View campus. They'll don large LCDs while running a new version of Android?either Flan or the version of Android beyond it?which our ... [ read the full article ]

Gizmodo even offers that the current Android OS used by handsets such as the G1 and DROID is not "real" Android. We will see that "real" version soon enough, however.
So... Google release a beta as a commercial product.

Wow soooo shocking no one would ever expect that Google would do that. (loaded with sarcasm)

God I HATE untested products. Its even worse when it's done with technology products. My last 2 smartphones were "experimental" at best.

Completely agree with you cart0181. Sadly, it is a symptom of a "must have the latest and greatest" society. By the time a piece of technology is out of its "consumer beta" phase, there is something new for the customer. The age of "built to last" is a thing of the past.

Seriouslyy?????

Is that even legal ?? How is that not a conflict of intrest ??? What happens to all those companies who invested a shit load of money in Android phones already ?? Do you think google will continue giving them all the latest stuff after they have their own phone to sell ??

Obviously not!!! its competition and they will need to win ! This is incredibly wierd......Im very surprised to hear this is no longer a rumour !. I would love to see how Motorola, HTC, Sonyericsson and all the rest of the android supporting companies will react to this !

I really don't think that google competing with their partners in the OHA is gonna change anything much. I think you guys need to stop worrying about that because the manufactures like SE, Moto & HTC obviously are not.
Take as an example symbian Nokia owns it but their competitors use it so it really isn't as big an issues as it's being made out to be.

In the past few weeks I have seen an interview with Google CEO Eric Schmidt on Fox Business where he was asked point-blank if Google was going to make its own phone. He explicitly denied that Google had any plans to sell its own phone.

Not to jump on the obvious...but there is already a google-branded smartphone. It is called the G1. I know it is not made by google, but "Google" is the branding on it. Without opening it up, the only Branding to be found is "T-Mobile" on the front and "Google" on the back.

Does this mean that google will start to make phones in-house? That seems like the only thing that would make it more of a "google branded phone" than what they had over a year ago.
