Is the X-Clamp fix effective without drilling?

If I don't drill and make the 8 holes bigger and instead opt for shorter screws and fix the motherboard on it, without fixing it on the board, will it be effective? And even if I drill the board, do I have to use 3 steel and 1 nylon washer. What if I maintain the same height made by those washers and use a bigger nylon washer and a steel nut or only a big 3 mm nylon washer, will it cause a problem? Thanks! :)

There should be no reason for you to have to drill the holes on the motherboard to make them bigger. the are the perfect size for a 5mm bolt. The purpose of the drilling the holes on the frame is if you wished to use the frame to keep your board from warping. So if you are not going to drill holes in your frame, then there is no reason to use 3 steel washers underneath the board, just 1 steel and 1 plastic. Good luck.

I didn't drill any holes. I used bolt - nylon washer - mother board - nylon washer - heatsink. Been running for a few months now with no problem. My console froze a couple times and rrod a few mins after, no freezing since.

You should really reflow the motherboard to fix this right. PM me if you are interested.

Just in case you have not completed your fix yet. What I do is I use the frame to keep the board from warping to much, you can't completely stop warping but it does help alot. I put 1 plastic washer and 3 steel washers under the board. I also put 1 plastic washer and 1 steel washer in between the topside of the board and the heatsink (It keeps you from cranking down to much on your processor). Make sure the plastic washers are the washers touching the board. Also, just in case you did not know, the bolt holding everything down will be on the outside of the frame (just to be clear).

The bolts in mine (or screws) stop it from warping, they sit very tight to the aluminum case. I probably could have used two washers on the board so that I don't crunch the CPU but no problems so far. Mine just gets really hot, but the sticker says it was made in 05', a refurb I got back from M$ so probably has an old board in it

Oh and one more thing, sorry, but I don't think we ever answered your original question. In my personal opinion, if you do not drill holes in your frame and bolt your board to it you're still going to allow your board to move around and that would defeat the purpose of even doing the x-clamp mod. So in that respect I don't believe it would be as effective. I hope one of us helped answer your question.

Agreed, there are multiple ways to do this. You can use the dvd power and split the power or you can solder the connection to the motherboard. I prefer the 2nd option because i would rather not draw power away from the dvd drive but im not sure it really will hurt the dvd drive that much. My xbox is drawing power from all over and it is running fine and extremly cool. I will make a tutorial on cooling mods in the coming weeks as i think this is a big deal

I always drill the case on my xclamp fixes, I have found it a more reliable that way.
