No one's suggesting connecting serial to your laptop. Take the USB memory stick & plug that into your laptop to see what files are there.
I have seen similar error messages on the Starview HD Combo, hence my attempt to help out here. I was using a USB memory stick at the time.
USB memory sticks are notorious for slow write speeds when being used on many different makes of PVR that allow recording to external devices. I've given up using them (even some quite expensive ones) unless for testing purposes. I use an external USB hard drive instead. It's worked brilliantly ever since, even on HD recordings.

You don't always have to record the whole program. It's possible to start recording manually then stop a couple of minutes later. I have several recordings saved that were done this way. Admittedly there are some recording issues to be ironed out, but with a decent device connected to the USB port it should record properly (most of the time at least).
As mentioned above, there are limits as to what other channels you can watch while recording a channel. They must be on the same transponder (i.e. frequency). A software update will not change this as it's not a problem as such and is not possible with a single tuner. This is the same situation as for freeview PVRs for terrestrial TV. Only twin tuner machines (e.g. Humax PVR9300 etc) allow multiple channels to be watched/recorded on different frequencies.
There are still bugs with this part of the Starview HD Combo though, as it doesn't always make every channel on that transponder available to watch. I don't know why, but I believe they're aware of this (hopefully).

I have the Combo and am pleased'ish
Can anyone explain to me why there are 2 tuners if you cannot record on both?
If I watch say Sky through Cable. Once I start recording, I should be able to flick to the satalite tuner and watch another channel shoudn't I? Otherwiase, what;s the point of dual tuners?
Apart from getting more channels on the satalite, I cannot see the point of having two tuners?
Originally posted by TheBish: To watch recorded programs you should be able to go into the USB menu & look in the 'Records' folder. Each recording should then have its own directory that you can access to watch the recording.
Alternatively, I think you can just press the play (>) button on the remote to access the list of available recordings.
As for the system being locked out when you're recording, it's supposed to do that. As was mentioned in the sales blurb etc. you can record one channel & watch a different one, provided they're both on the same transponder (i.e. frequency). To record one channel & watch ANY other channel would need a twin cable tuner in the box.
While recording, press the OK button to access the list of available channels. You can then select a channel from that list. Note:- There is still a bug with this feature in that it doesn't always list every channel that's on the same transponder. It seems more reliable with recording from FTA channels at the moment.
