I'm a newbie and want to know if the new PS3 120GB is capable of playing the blu-ray movies (like "The Dark Knight" etc which are copy protected) and output only 1080i via the Component AV cables.

The reason I ask is: It says it requires HDMI for HDCP protected content. However I do not have a 1080p TV, I've only 1080i Sony TV with Component AV input.

I saw this on the SONY PS3 website where it says the following:

Quote:
Video output in HD requires cables and an HD-compatible display, both sold separately. Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard. HDMI cable not included. Additional equipment may be required to use the HDMI connector.

If anyone has 1080i and know for sure it plays or not, can you please reply. Thanks.

I talked to the retail store sales folks, they said that the output will NOT be in 1080i; It will be reduced to 480;

Not that the difference between two interlaced formats will be much different.

Does your TV has HDMI or DVI at all? 720P looks way better than 1080i does anyway.

If your tv supports 1080 (i or p) over component it shouldn't be an issue. As my 34" Sony Wega (Glass Tube) is 1080i and plays BD's over Component fine.

I agreee it plays BD but does it output 1080i or just 480i/p?

It was implied that it plays fine (as in 1080i) but I haven't used that TV in a while (or with a PS3) since I upgraded to a 60" SXRD and then replaced the 34" Wega with a 46" Bravia LCD. But from my recollection it worked in 1080i for movies when I first used it with my 20gb PS3.

Killerbug is correct, in my opinion. 720p looks better than 1080i. My Wega only output in 1080i and when I got a 1080p TV, I seen the difference with Blu-Ray! Although my DVR tops out at 1080i. I adjusted to 720p and seen the difference again!! Experiment with your TV settings and PS3 settings, as you can make ANY resolution look as best as possible. Standard setting are never the way to go.
