Hello all! I decided to go ahead and replace my blu-ray drive myself considering sony hasn't responded to any of my BBB complaints (probably swamped with complaints because of 3.xx).
My issue consisted of the motor not turning the disc anymore, but it still read the game (blue light still on). My model is the CECHA 60GB. I figured a simple drive swap would be the easiest to do. Didn't want to go through the trouble of just replacing the motor itself.
So I had a friend with a 20GB Backwards compatible ps3 which he got a slim and didn't need anymore. His drive worked perfectly. He had the CECHB model, while mine is the CECHA.
Did the swap no problem, the drive spins the disc now, and the blue light blinks that it can recognize my discs. Everything seems fine and dandy.
However, my problem is no CDDVD or Blu-Ray disc I put in shows up in the menus even though mechanically everything is working fine and dandy (Motor spinning, disc is recognized). The drive worked fine in his 20GB Ps3.
Is there some sort of step I'm missing here? Is there a reason why my games aren't showing up when I put them in the drive?
A weird thing I notice, if a disc is in the drive when I shut it off, I get the 3 fast beeps then it shuts down, but no blinking red or yellow lights. When no discs are in the drive it shuts down fine.
you gotta get he exact same drive you had in your old one im thinking the hardware isnt compatible, every model had some key differences in hardware and software. yes the drive will run, but the ps3 wont reconize it, think of it as a computer, u get a new disc drive, but u decide to get drivers for your new hardware for the model you didnt install, the computer just wont reconize it.
Hmm.. I thought the 20GB BC model and the 60GB BC model have identical drives? I see many drive sold which are compatible with both CECHA01 and CECHB01 models, which is why I figured it would be an easy swap. Unless these drives sold online are completely different in the first place.
If I'm wrong though, I have no problem trying to look for or buy another drive. I just don't want to actually "buy" one, and have the same issue.
Did you take the controler board from the last drive and put it on the new one? I think that you either need to transfer the old board to the new drive...otherwise you have to format the HDD.
Uh oh.. I don't have the controller board from that 20GB ps3 anymore, i just simply swapped blu-ray drives.
You guys saying i can do a complete format/system restore and it will possibly fix it? or am i screwed now that I didnt swap both the drive and the board at the same time? =x

If you used the PS3 utility to do it, pull the drive, plug it into a PC, and format it there. Then put it back in the PS3 & format using the PS3 utility...this is the only way to get the PS3 utility to do a true format. I have not tried this to see if it fixes the controler mismatch issue, but I have heard that some have been able to do the job like this.
If it still does not work once this is done, go online with the system and make sure the system is activated.
