Problem?s burning DVD-R?s?

I?ve got a Lite-on 811S dual format DVD burner and have successfully burned a number of DVD+RW?s and DVD+R?s, but the two times I?ve tried to burn a DVD-R, Nero gets about two-thirds the way thru the burn process and fails. Should I try a different brand of media or there something else I should try. The reason I?d like to try a ?R is because my standalone DVD player is old (Pioneer DV414) and doesn?t seem to be able to handle the +R?s. I get some pixelation and stuttering during playback. They play fine on my PC DVD drive and I?ve tried them on a few friends newer standalones, with no problems, so I?m pretty sure its my player and not the DVD itself, but before I bought a newer player I wanted to see if ?R?s might work. Thanks,
