Hello all,

I'm very keen to buy a slim PS3 (250GB Version) being as the prices are now good for christmas....I would want to use it especially for its blu ray features, and as i now have numerous MKV Blu Ray files on my pc i wanted to know if its easy to either burn them to dual layer discs or better still i would like to transfer those huge files onto the PS3 hard drive and wonder if its as easy as that or are there many things to watch out for?

Are their any downsides to buying a 250GB slim ps3? ive read things about it not having a multi card reader (not sure what that means) and also that the fan sounds like a jumbo jet taking off so im curious to know if there is any substance to that.

If anyone could help, offer useful advice i would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance, John

Yeah if you have an external HDD it's easy to transfer those files to the ps3 hard drive. If not there are other ways which are just as simple. If the files are over 4gb it gets a bit more complex but still possible.

As for downsides to the 250gb, the fan is fine, just depends on peoples interpretation. And the multicard reader has been out of PS3's since they stopped making the original launch models so that isn't even an option really.

Hope that makes it an easier choice for you John,

Find the one that told you that and shout him between the eyes.
The slim is so damn quite that you can hardly hear it working.

PS3 cant play MKV files, and you cant transfer them through ex-HDD cause the 4gb limitation.
DL-DVD's are again limited to 8,5gb.
The only way that i know is through Java PS3 Media Server.

You'd either have to stream them using the Java PS3 Media Server as SDF said, or you can remux/convert them to another file format.

1.) A multi-card reader is what it says it is. It reads SD cards... memory sticks... not sure what else counts as a card... PSP and camera memory sticks, that kind of stuff. I've never had a use for it.

2.) The fan on the Slim is infinitely quieter than the one on the original PS3, which is in turn infinitely quieter than the one on the Xbox 360. Ergo, the fan on the Slim is very, very quiet.

Hope that helps.

I just wanted to add that it would be very hard to "shout" somebody between the eyes. It'd be fun to watch, though.

ps3 can play m2ts file format which is about 4 gigs a movie 90% of the time it will fit on fat 32 hdd, ive only had a few movies that were a few bytes over, but those u can tranfer over your network, takes a while depending on connection, but does the job. FAT32 = 4gb limit, PS3 = no limit.

You can get a multi card reader to USB for @ $10 at best buy. You can pull the memory stick (SD card, many kinds of cards) out of your camera or what ever and DL it straight to your PS3. I prefer to DL everything to my PC then stream it to the PS3 using the media server.

?... my m2ts files come in at 1920x1080, bluray rips are 4-5 gigs at 720p and 7-8 at 1080p.

i must have more than 200 BDrips all at 1080p and most of them are 9-12gb with 1xDTS audio.
I havent got any FullHD movie smaller than 6-7gb yet.

well i believe m2ts are also small becasue of their reduced audio, it still sounds good none the less, but just makes it smaller in size.
