Ive just been given an arcade 360 as a birthday present and was looking to mod it. Can i tell what dvd drive is in it without opening the box etc? Is there something in the barcode or anything that shows what kind it is? This prob is a daft question so all abuse will be taking without complaint

Yeah dude just open the tray where you usually put the games and just look at the shape of the disk tray, here.

Thanks for that mate but what i meant was the box it came in, not the actual console. I thought there would maybe be a clue to what drive was in it thru the barcode or model etc

This is a breakdown of the type of drives found in several brand new retail consoles on store shelves now.

You can view the manufactured dates through a window on the top of the retail box. This does not apply to refurbs or return exchanges from M$ during these time periods.

3-12-08 to 5-29-09: BenQ VAD6038* Drive & Lite-On DG-16D2S 74850**

6-01-09 to 8-31-09: Lite-On DG-16D2S Drives (74850** or 83850C V1*)

9-01-09 to present: Lite-On DVD Drive (83850C V2 or 93450)***

Methods of Drive Modification

*Simple SATA PC connection using a VT6421 PCI card or compatible chipset
** Requires (*+ a probe to extract drive key and serial information.)
*** Requires (*+ wires, resistors and soldering skills - the difficult ones thus far for beginners).

Note: Good Luck and keep in mind the risk you take of your console being banned from accessing XBox Live by modding your drive.
Once banned, the effects are permanent. At this present time, there is NO safe way to play backups on Live.
