any dremmel will work, i like my corded one with different speed settings. use that with cutting wheels. i suggest buying the diamond cutting wheels, because the ones that come with the dremmel will shatter and you get pieces bouncing off your face. it doesnt hurt or nuthin, but i messed up my cut a little bit when the piece hit me in the face and i jumped cuz it scared me lol. but if you do use the regular cutting wheels, have some water with a little bit of dish soap in it and dip your wheel in it every once and a while, it helps keep it from shattering. clean up your cuts with the sanding wheel, then go over your cuts with some gritty sand paper, then finish with some 2000 grit or somethin high and you should be good

For the plastic I used a cutting bit to start and then used a disc that came with it. For the mesh you will want a diamond coated cutting wheel. I got mine from harbor freight for around $5 (got a pack of about 6) they weren't very good quality however I went through about 3. You can probably get a better one that would last longer elsewhere.

or you can just rip that whole metal piece out. its not needed. oh and when your cutting if the plastic starts to melt, you could either grab it while its still warm and pull it off, or wait til it dries and break it off with pliers

Yeah just throw away the metal shielding. You don't need it. The metal case is supposed to block interference with other devices. Over the last year, I've done 30+ 360s and not one of them has caused any interference problems whatsoever. Besides, it'll more than likely get in the way of your cut-out design.
Post pics when done.

with my modding exp i've come to learn the diamond wheels work best for plastic if you decide to cut aluminum they work alright the standard cutting wheels i wouldn't put any money on they shatter to easily if you use normal cutting bits i suggest Dremel Cut-off wheels model number 540 can get a package at wal-mart for 6$ i use them to cut out fan holes in computer cases usually 1/8th steel they are rather useful, and fairly difficult to break

I know your question was directed at Kyther, but I have some input for you. I had a (very old) Dremel that went out on me while cutting a case. I ended up buying that same Black & Decker from Walmart to finish the job. The Dremel feels smoother and more balanced, but the Black & Decker works pretty well itself. These are the type of cuts I made with the Black & Decker, using the standard Dremel cut-off wheel, and a round hand file.

Standard cut-off wheels which I use all the time. (I go through about 1 wheel per case).
Dremel Diamond Wheel which I've never used and don't see a need for (unless they don't wear down).

thank you for the vote of confidence eebeejay and very very nice work on the cases i thought about changing my leds in the front but im to paranoid to solder it i also notice you have the clear dvd drive tops in there as well, as for you bhk7594 unfortunatly i havent modded my 360 painted it gloss black with a nice clear coat but that was way back before i had the tool, i have however used it on plastics as well as modding my original xbox (the big black brick) but i dont have any pics besides making the logo light up, my camera cable was eaten by my apartment, anyways as far as bits go since its plastic you really dont need anything special i would suggest just some cutting wheel for large areas and a side cutting bit (sort of looks like a drill bit but its not) smaller areas but you may want a rather steady hand for that one one slip and its a mess. Just watch for melting it and dont touch it, you will get burnt (self-exp wasnt thinking)

They are stock Lite-Ons and BenQs that I used the same cut-off wheel to cut out, and a half-round hand file to clean up.

I've never seen a BenQ/Lite-On cover which is why I cut out my own.

Nah, they are just open. I may use a CD jewel case to cut out a plastic cover. It's cot to be very thin, because I want it inside the DVD drive,

I used one of those on my first cut-out. It rubbed against the spinning disc so I took it out.

thats nuts! does the tape hold good? i bought a cheapo hot glue gun and the long glue sticks and used that. then when i was putting my case back together, and realized the plexi was a little too big, i was able to just peel it right off. had no problems with it yet and ive had it done for like 2 years now. havent cut out a disk drive yet, dont have the balls to do it lol. doing the window in the hard drive was a pain in the a$$ tho
