Hi so when I place a game in the 360, the following happens. Laser moves to the end of the rails (closest to the disc center) making a light grinding noise, then moves back to about 5mm from the spinner. laser flashes. Laser moves toward spinner again, and back, making same grinding noise. Spinner spins for less than a second, and the laser flashes again. I observed this without a disc in the tray. When I insert a disc, it says reading for a second, then open tray. I have checked, all magnets are in place. I have taken the top magnet out and placed it on the disc when it is in the tray as shown in some videos. I have cleaned both the lens and the moving components around the motor and sliders. I have also tried pushing the laser close to the spinner, and tightening/loosening the screws on the underside of the drive to move the disc closer/farther away from the laser. No luck. Can someone help me identify this problem? There are no issues with the console other than this. Thanks.

You may just need to look into "Pot Calibration" it fairly easy with a multimeter and has fixed many boxes I have seen with this issue.

Have you tried original games? Burnt games are more error prone and thus harder to read. If originals work fine or even sometimes, a pot calibration is almost guaranteed to work. But it means the laser is degrading and you may eventually need a new drive or laser.

If you get a new drive be sure that you know how to flash/spoof or who ever modded your system initially knows how to do it. If drive is not spoofed/flashed properly it wont play games. If you have a Samsung or Hitachi and buy the same drive, you can just swap the boards and no further flashing is required.

Hey thanks for the replies. I have tried original games as well as burned games with no luck. I bought this xbox locally to repair (thinking it was a magnet issue) so i'm not sure if the flashing was even done properly. By the looks of the interior, which has brown x-clamp impressions burned into the plastic and black soot around the fan vents, it wasn't taken care of very well so this could definitely be the problem. Is there a way to test for a bad flash? I will also look into the pot calibration technique later to see if I can get it working that way.

If you suspect a possible bad flash, reflash it. More than likely though, it sounds like a pot calibration issue.

dump the flash and if the key is 5a5a5a5a5a repeating or all 00's then it is bad for sure

Also just got a reply from the girl I bought it from. She says she bought it modded and it worked for a month then gave out. I guess that rules out a modding error. I will try the pot calibration as soon as I can and post the results. Thanks for the help.

I could do with some assitance also
You see, my drive was suffering from the unreadable disc error on mw2, only on mw2m and the disc was new and not damged in any way, it will say unreadable after 10mins and started doing it about a week after i got the game.

So with nothing to loose i opened up my xbox, opened up my Hitachi 2005 drive (old i know). I made sure teh magnet was in its proper place on the roof of teh drive, it wasnt geting stuck at all. I cleaned up the drive nice and applied oil lubricant to the rails and motor. I POT calibrated the lasers resistance to 3.15 from 4.46. As it is supposed to be around 3.2, apparently. I also noticed some of teh screws underneath the drive where kinda looses so i tightened them all up. And i made sure the laser was clean by usuing a mgnifying glass and an ever so slightly damp cloth to brush off the dust. I alos made sure teh laser was as close to the middle as it would go.
Now it was not like this before; before it would scan for the disc and after a few seconds would say open tray, after MANY attempts it would finnaly read the disc.
Now it wont even try to read it, it says open tray almost instantly.

In my stubborness and utter faith in my work, i didnt bother to test it before closing up the xbox...
Compleetly expecting it to work, i inserted teh disc and was confornted with this slap in the face straight away, basically. i made it worse, some how...

I NEED HELP; im THIS *notions with fingers* CLOSE to buying an elite as i ould really like 120gb hard drive and hdmi port. as apposed to composite and 20gb hardrive. I do not know what i could have done. Any thoughts on what i have done wrong? I put everything back correctly, tightened it all up, cleaned off the old dusty grease and applied some good oil, made sure the laser was correctly calibrated to 3.2 Ohms. The magnet was not getting caught at all i could not make it get stuck when i tried. And i made sure to push the laser into teh middle.

Sorry fo rthe essay, IM DESPERATE

Also: any information on this Unreadble nonsense that is happening everywhere with MW2 would be much appreciated; its very odd.

The easy fix would be to buy a new drive for about 20 bucks and reflash it with your drive's info. Tada! problem fixed.

A few things stuck out about your post though if you still want to keep pulling your hair out over this.

When you say the magnet is at the roof of the drive, that sounds like your problem. There are two main magnets on the drives...the white one built into the roof (drive case) and the black one in the center that keeps the disc in place. If you open up your drive and the black magnet is stuck to the white one on the roof...that's your problem.

The other thing is that as drives age the lasers get weaker. Sometimes you have to increase the output of the laser past the recommended settings in order for them to work...especially true when playing backup games.

Make sure you clean both the lens AND the mirror on the drive. See here:

I did not notice any mirror... hmm... this is new to me.
Well the magnet on the drive is not stuck to the roof, and if it was reading discs after a few trys before, pot tweaking the laser should make it better, as should doing all i did. Well now to open it up, break off some more little plastic bits in the process, and teake a look.

well i do not know if yu can help, but when i put a disc in, with the magnet on top i know. The laser moves, but doesn not turn on, and teh disc doe snot spin. But is teh disc not spinning because teh laser is not turning on? As soon as teh disc goes in the laser moves, it does not turn on, then it says open tray. Have i blown the diode? Should i not have pot tweaked a laser 4 years old?

hmm, ok, now the laser turns on after i like pushed a cable or maybe fater i move dor something. But the laser will go to the read spot on the disc, the laser will turn on for a split second and then it will say open tray. So im thinking the motor isnt working? i tried manulaly spinning it, stupid i know. But that ddi nothing. Well I am probbaly going to go buy an elite because i really would like hdmi, a 120gb hard drive. And a brand new waranty! The updated motherboard and dvd drive would be nice too!

Oh and sorry for the post spree...
But my last attempt to do anything to the drive i peeled off the sticker and cleaned the mirror, but i did not replace the sticker that was covering where the miror was. For future reference, is it fine for the sticker to be off? Note: I ddi this after i said the laser was not working.
