Sony mulling PSN monthly fees?

article published on 15 December, 2009

According to Sony Computer Entertainment executive VP and CTO Masayuki Chatani, the company is mulling monthly subscription fees for the PlayStation Network. "We would face difficulties if our business depended solely on the sell-and-forget model. After we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services," said Chatani, via GI.biz."We can also accept ... [ read the full article ]

I'm pretty confident they won't charge us for actually playing on-line (I hope) and charge for the upcoming 'premium' services instead. I still haven't bought one thing from the PSN Store, nothing there interests me.

The only things I've downloaded are map packs for COD and Killzone. Maybe some free content for LBP. Other than that I don't find anything that interests me on there.

To bad the free live service is crippled and you really cant do anything with it you need the gold service to game online...if it wasnt so crippled I might have bought a 360 despite the horrid accessory prices that give me nightmares to this day.

Pm your ebay link or where your selling these items im interested already

I too bought the ps3 for the online service of free a nice price tag imo since no one besides greedy ass ms charges for it....this news is actually very old though and in no way has been confirmed of what they are doing or how things would work. Seeing sony past though it would probably be like quore you get some extras but dont really need it.

Free? Yes. Good? Highly debatable. Honestly, free online is the only thing Sony has going for the PS3 right now. Yes, it has some good games (I want Valkyria Chronicles...) but the 360 honestly has better.

I feel like if they lost free online play then they've lost some customers. Some people (obviously?) bought the PS3 over the 360 for that reason alone. I hope this isn't like the PSP-Go where they're making yet another move to lose money. We'll see though. I don't know enough about it yet.

PSN will eventually become like xbox live. At first, PSN will bring in a subsciption service where you can get updates new features that are useless (like facebook, or something along those lines). Then they will gradually introduce more and more content until you have pay for PSN just to download a map pack. This is the beginning of the end.

I love stories like this. News flash everyone, Sony is THINKING about charging for something, but we're not sure what. Oh and it will happen between now and sometime.... so stay tuned for something...maybe.

That's normal for "the man" to make every last penny in profit from it's faithful customers. I don't expect any less from "the man" and I am never disappointed.

With the way the economy is, a little extra profit for "the man" will definitely help the bottom line and allow it to continue to fund it's relentless war against piracy.

While you are playing your PS3 online, you are also being played by "the man". That is why you have to choose carefully your gaming platform, less you get "played".

Yeah, they are barely making a profit from console sales anymore. Of course they are going to find other ways to get money, Sony is a business and their purpose is to make money. Sony has probably already decided to charge for PSN.

Sony isn't dumb and will not charge like Xbox Live...I think if anything, Microsoft moves to free model eventually...

I've always found it amusing how micro$oft charges xbox users to use their own connection that they already pay for. Hope sony doesn't go the same way.

lol, isn't the free live service just so you can upload your high scores and purchase those add-on downloads?

When talking about monthly fees and such, I think he was refering to games like Gomibako, where in the Japanese PSN store you can either purchase the entire game, or pay 100 Yen for 3 plays (a bit like you would put coins in an arcade machine). I could be wrong but it sounded to me like they might expand that model to other games.

you guys are seriously sad!, i own a xbox 360 and trust me i am no fan boy, but i pay 50.00 for 13 months of xbox live service, which equals to about $3.85/month roughly, very small amount for so much in return, i am sure they will use the money even if they do start charging to make the servers way better, people probably spend more than that on toothpaste!!! really no need to bitch, i have play cod mf2 online on both consoles, and live is way smoother than psn.

lol...it might be like their firmware updates, where they tell you that you are not required to install them, but they don't tell you that you can't do anything else without them.

Also not a fanboy, but the way I see it, is that PSN offers the exact same thing XboxLive does, save for cross-game chat ... for free. I play just as smoothly on PSN than on Live. I know it's not much, but saving out 50 USD a year means I can buy an extra game and some DLC with that money on PSN.

I can't imagine what a premium PSN would offer it wasn't online play. Like what else would people pay for? Qore obviously isn't pulling in enough money for them and that offers news and early access to demos and betas. The only premium I could think of would be some online rental service of movies and/or PSN games.

$50 would be a lot for me. That's the cost of a second 360 after 5 years.

QFT.

The PSN has WAAAY more dedicated servers for it's games unlike the vast majority of titles on the 360 which are P2P, there is absolutely no way LIVE! is "smoother" for gameplay when you look at the facts. Especially after the last 2 holiday seasons where LIVE! was crippled/unavailable for DAYS lasting up to almost 2 weeks in places. Or how both releases of Gears' online multiplayer was deplorable at launch...now the PSN is not without it's issues I do admit ~ most recently CodMW2, BUT that was only for a day or 2 and was an Infinity Ward issue not a PSN one (and in all fairness like it was for Epic with Gears) since they (IW) opted for ALL versions of the game to be P2P (which blows for all gamers).

The bottom line is that both services give you multiplayer, one has cross game chat, one doesn't, one charges you while the other doesn't PLUS the fact that one has 30, 60 & even 256 player offerings while the other is limited to what 12? MAYBE 16?. Me? I say give me the free one over a X-game chat option when you get SOOO much more at no cost...not mention that it's in the works on the PSN for FREE

i dont see how grown folks can really make a big stink over 50.00 a year what can you really get for 50.00 a year i spend more than that on coffee in a month.the point is if you can afford to buy a ps3 or a 360 than another 50.00 wont break the bank because it look like both of them will cost you a few bucks sooner or later.PSN will be a pay service it just make sense with the money it will be a better service. bottom line if you like a service any service cell, satellite radio, cable you will pay for it.
